7 Day GM Diet Plan for Weight Loss
7 Day GM Diet Plan for Weight Loss HealthifyMe Blog HealthifyMe Blog - The definitive guide to weightloss, fitness and living a healthier life.
The original GM Diet Plan was developed by General Motors, with the help of the Food and Drug Administration and the United States Department of Agriculture, in 1985 for its employees. The idea was to make these employees healthier, and in the process, improve workforce productivity. The initial results were impressive. The workers underwent significant weight loss in just a week, and showed improved efficiency, energy and confidence.
While the GM Diet Plan for weight loss was deemed a success, and is considered easy to follow, most nutritionists do not recommend that you follow it. Although it results in immediate weight loss, the diet also has several side effects that we shall discuss later in the article.
At HealthifyMe, we believe one should aim to follow a balanced diet that would ensure weight loss while also helping the body absorb the nutrients it requires. If you’re looking for a diet chart to help you lose weight and keep you healthy, we suggest you take a look at the best Indian diet plan for weight loss.

7 Day GM Diet Plan
The GM Diet Plan is focused on ensuring the consumption of complex carbs, along with low-calorie foods. This combined with an increased water intake can result in a significant weight loss in the span of a week. The idea is to limit one’s weekly diet to just fruits, vegetables, brown rice, and chicken. The plan, initially designed for the employees of General Motors, is as shown below.

GM Diet Plan Indian Version
The Indian version of the GM Diet Plan would not change very much from the original version. While the original GM Diet allows the consumption of meat in the form of beef, this would have to be replaced in India since a sizeable portion of the population does not consume beef.
While the non-vegetarians can still consume protein in the form of chicken on day 5 and 6, the vegetarians can replace the meat with a cup of brown rice.
GM Diet Day 1
Start the diet by consuming as many fruits as you wish to on the very first day. There are no specific instructions on when one should eat them. However, watermelons and muskmelons are highly recommended since they contain high amounts of fiber. You can also include apples, oranges and papaya in your diet.
Another important part of the diet would be to consume 8 to 12 glasses of water in the day. One must avoid starving at any point of the day. If you’re hungry at any time, feel free to eat some fruits and satisfy your hunger.
These fiber-rich and low-fat foods keep an individual full for longer, thereby reducing an individual’s calorie intake. The high water intake will also serve to flush out the toxins from the body and prepare it for the rest of the diet.
On day one, avoid any kind of vegetables completely. Among fruits, it is ideal to stay away from bananas. Day one should feel a little easier since the monotony of the food would be yet to kick in. Stick to the plan, and feel active and energetic.
Time | Meal |
8:00 AM | 1 medium apple
A few plums or an orange |
10:30 AM | ½ bowl of sliced muskmelon |
12:30 PM | 1 bowl of watermelon |
4:00 PM | 1 large orange or mosambi |
6:30 PM | 1 cup of muskmelon and pomegranate salad |
8:30 PM | ½ cup of watermelon |
GM Diet Day 2
The second day of the GM Diet involves eating only vegetables. These veggies can be consumed, or can be cooked in order to make them palatable. Ensure that there is no oil involved in their preparation.
While eating potatoes deep fried, or even a packet of your favourite brand of chips may not be allowed, you can snack on vegetables at any time of the day if you’re hungry. If absolutely required, olive oil or butter can be used sparingly for flavour.
Vegetables contain all the nutrients that you need to sustain the body. You get the necessary carbs from potatoes, protein from peas, and carrots and beans are packed with fiber and all essential vitamins. After a relatively low-carb day one, this will help restore the carbohydrate content in the body. In turn, this will further provide you with enough energy to keep the diet going. Unlike the first day, you must stay away from fruits altogether on day 2.
Time | Meal |
8:00 AM | 1 cup of boiled potatoes |
10:30 AM | ½ bowl of cucumber |
12:30 PM | 1 cup of lettuce, spinach, cucumber, and capsicum |
4:00 PM | ½ cup sliced carrots and a glass of lemon juice with a pinch of salt |
6:30 PM | 1 cup boiled broccoli and green peas |
8:30 PM | 1 cucumber |
GM Diet Day 3
On the third day of the diet, one must stick to eating a combination of fruits and vegetables. These foods could be the same as that consumed in the first two days. The only foods that must be avoided are potatoes and bananas.
Halfway through the week, your body would have begun to adjust to the new diet. After a day of eating only vegetables, the fruits would be a welcome addition to it. The combination of fruits and vegetables also provides the body with the benefits of high fiber and protein.
You would also need to include 8 to 12 glasses of water in order to flush out all toxins from the body. You can also add the GM Diet Soup to your diet on the third day. In addition to replenishing your body, and giving the body all the nutrients it needs, this variety will also help satisfy your taste buds and break the monotony of the first two days. On this day, one must take care to avoid the consumption of bananas and potatoes.
Time | Meal |
8:00 AM | ½ bowl of muskmelon |
10:30 AM | 1 cup of pineapple or pear |
12:30 PM | 1 cup of lettuce, spinach, cucumber, and capsicum |
4:00 PM | ½ cup sliced carrots and a glass of lemon juice with a pinch of salt |
6:30 PM | 1 cup of boiled broccoli and green peas |
8:30 PM | 1 cucumber |
GM Diet Day 4
The bananas that were avoided over the first three days, can finally be consumed on the fourth day. One must consume 8 bananas over the course of the day. The consumption can be split across the day’s meal and snack times. In addition to that, one should also consume a big glass of milk each, at breakfast, lunch and dinner. In case this becomes monotonous, a bowl of soup can be included in the diet.
Bananas are rich in pectin, and hence, they help in digestion. They also provide one’s body with the instant energy they need. They are also high in potassium, apart from being low in salt. Additionally, the milk one consumes on this day is also a great source of potassium and calcium. Thanks to being fortified with Vitamin D, the milk further helps strengthen bones.
On Day 4, one must completely avoid snacking on fruits other than bananas. Potatoes and sweet potatoes must be ignored as well. You could also substitute bananas and milk with fig and soy milk.
Time | Meal |
8:00 AM | 2 bananas |
10:30 AM | 1 banana |
12:30 PM | Milkshake (2 bananas + 1 glass of milk + a dash of cocoa powder) |
4:00 PM | 2 bananas |
6:30 PM | 1 banana
1 glass of milk |
8:30 PM | 1 glass of milk |
GM Diet Day 5
On day 5, vegetarians can opt to eat a bowl of brown rice, while non-vegetarians can consume a lean protein source like fish or chicken breast. In addition to that, one must also eat 6 large tomatoes.
While vegetarians can eat a bowl of brown rice for lunch, care must be taken to ensure that minimal oil is used for cooking. Combat the high amounts of uric acid that your body will be producing by drinking upto 15 glasses of water everyday. Non-vegetarians can eat about 500 g of baked or lightly fried skinless chicken, along with the 6 tomatoes.
Brown rice is rich in fiber, and helps with digestion. At the same time, chicken and fish are excellent sources of lean protein. Additionally, fish also has omega-3 fatty acids. The high fiber in tomatoes mean they aid digestion too.
It is important to avoid potatoes and sweet potatoes among vegetables, and bananas among fruits that were recommended earlier in the week. One can also have a bowl of GM Diet Soup as part of the mid-morning or evening snack.
Time | Meal |
9:00 AM | 3 tomatoes |
12:30 PM | ½ cup of brown rice
Sautéed assorted veggies |
4:00 PM | 2 tomatoes |
6:30 PM | 1 bowl of brown rice
1 tomato ½ cup of sautéed veggies |
GM Diet Day 6
Day 6 of the GM Diet requires the individual to have cooked or uncooked vegetables. Vegetarians can opt for a cup of brown rice, while non-vegetarians can include a lean protein source like fish or chicken breast in their diet.
Another relatively high food intake day, the sixth day also follows a pattern similar to the previous day with the addition of cooked or uncooked vegetables. One must make sure that the vegetables are boiled and not fried. The salads should not have any heavy dressing either.
Non-vegetarians can consume up to 500 g of skinless chicken along with vegetables apart from tomatoes and potatoes. In addition to the previous day’s foods, the mix of vegetables on day 6 also provides the fiber the body requires.
Ideally, one must avoid all fruits along with potatoes and sweet potatoes. On the sixth day, the weight loss with now be visible.
Time | Meal |
9:00 AM | 1 glass carrot juice |
12:30 PM | ½ cup of brown rice + ½ cup of veggies |
4:00 PM | 1 cup of cucumber slices |
6:30 PM | ½ bowl of brown rice
½ cup of veggiesChicken/cottage cheese |
GM Diet Day 7
On the last day of the 7-day plan, one would need a cup of brown rice, an assortment of vegetables and fruit juice. One can eat a cup of brown rice along with a bowl of boiled vegetables for lunch. Drink sugarless fruit juice after every meal or snack to complement the nutrient-rich vegetables.
The rice and vegetables will provide the body with some much-needed energy to keep the body going right through the day. The fruit juices will help flush out the toxins from the system.
As with the previous 6 days, one must avoid certain foods on the seventh day as well. It is advisable to stay clear of vegetables like potatoes and sweet potatoes whereas fruits like banana, cherry, mango and pear are to be avoided as well.
Time | Meal |
9:00 AM | 1 glass of orange/apple juice |
12:30 PM | ½ cup of brown rice
½ cup of sautéed veggies |
4:00 PM | 1 cup of watermelon/few assorted berries |
6:30 PM | 1 bowl of GM Soup |
GM Diet Soup Recipe
The GM diet soup is an important part of the diet. It can be consumed in relatively higher quantities on any day, in order to make sure that one doesn’t go hungry.
Ingredients
- One cabbage
- Three medium-sized tomatoes
- Six large onions
- Two green peppers
- A bunch of celery
- Half a litre of water
Preparation
- Chop the onions and peppers. Place them in a pot and saute them in olive oil till they turn mild brown.
- Then, cut the tomatoes, celery, and cabbage. Now, add them to the pot along with water.
- It takes about 60 minutes for the soup to get cooked. The vegetables must be boiled, and left to simmer. Now, season the soup with some salt and pepper, and enjoy a bowl of delicious soup.
GM Diet Side Effects
The GM Diet is popular the world over. However, they have several side effects that need to be considered before one chooses to follow the diet.
-
- Although the diet may help you lose weight quickly, it is high in fiber but low in protein, carbs and fats. Due to this, your body may not receive the nutrients it requires.
- The GM Diet can lead to metabolic slowdown in your body. While your weight loss may not be affected initially, this would make it difficult to maintain your body weight.
- The body would use all the fluids in the diet for metabolism. The diet could, therefore, lead to dehydration.
- The other possible side effects of the GM Diet also includes weakness, headaches, and hunger pangs.
Expert Review
GM diet is a crash diet that goes against the principles of a balanced diet. Though the weight loss or the results are pretty quick and evident, the long term effects are more damaging. Since you undergo a drastic change in your regular eating routine, the body sheds weight and when you resume your normal diet, one gains as much or more weight than they lost.
I personally believe that any diet which requires you to stop eating your day-to-day regular staple food is not sustainable. Weight management requires consistently good eating habits and a balanced diet with all nutrients. Avoid following an unrealistic diet that requires extra effort to change your lifestyle completely, and put the same effort into balancing your daily meals. This will help maintain a good lifestyle change, and ensure sustainable weight management.
Summary
By focusing on the consumption of complex carbs and low-calorie foods, the GM Diet Plan almost guarantees weight loss. However, following the GM Diet could lead to an individual not receiving the nutrients they require. In addition to that, it could also make it difficult to maintain one’s body weight after the diet has helped one lose weight.

I surrender
I surrender
PLEASE READ!
First let me say I am NOT IN MENOPAUSE. I’m 47 and proud and work with women who are but this is an inaccurate statement on the cover. AND today I get to practice living my work… I get to let go of control, drop into my heart, practice gratitude and “surrender”
There’s that word again… “surrender”
I swear I am getting that word tattooed on my arm.
This weekend there were a lot of tech issues, glitches, email delivery issues and the founding member offer I’ve been so excited about. All small “detail glitch” stuff that has all been fixed AND in the big picture they were not things for me to get worked up about.
My “Controller personality”
AND my “controller personality” was in high speed trying to “fix and control everything” all weekend. It was like I refused to let go, slow down and drop the small details- I was sweating ALL the “small stuff” again. And I know better!
It takes consistent practice and a tribe to remind you to surrender. I thought I had mastered this but I have not yet. I’m learning this new way. I wasted hours and hours being stressed, trying to “fix” things and control them.
Control is an illusion. It’s not possible. And I still fell into the spell of it and tried.
And well, the universe had a lesson for me this am.
I wake up to THIS cover and feature all over the UK! I’m grateful for the coverage AND I’m also not in menopause and never said I was. “Stop the press!” I get that expression now! Haha!
Clearly a miscommunication somewhere and I certainly can’t fix or control this.
Sooooo there you have it.
I GET IT!
I SURRENDER
I SURRENDER
I SURRENDER
Breathing, letting it go now, giggling about it and…
I’m grateful for the coverage.
I’m grateful for the coverage.
I’m grateful for the coverage .
The article is great despite the word that shouldn’t have been written there.
I surrender. Will you?
More committed than ever this morning to my vision.
This is a movement- we get to surrender.
Ladies: where is the need to control and “get it all done” holding you back?
xo, Natalie Jill

The Problem With People Pleasing
The Problem With People Pleasing
I used to pride myself on being a chameleon…That meant:
-Being all things to all people.
-Adjusting my likes and dislikes to theirs.
-Saying, doing what I think they want to hear or see.
It was exhausting! And I didn’t realize what I know now- there is a name for it and it’s called “people pleasing”. It’s such an easy trap to fall into!
I mean… We want to be liked. We want to fit in. We don’t want to create problems… But there is a huge problem with people pleasing.
There is huge cost.
We forget who WE are.
We lose the authentic version of ourselves.
We don’t know what we really like or don’t .
We stop going for our dreams.
With people pleasing you are doing something you THINK is right.
You don’t know it is hurting you but it is.
How do you know you are doing this?
-You find yourself saying YES when you mean no.
-You find yourself changing your beliefs, your plans, your ideas because of someone else.
-You worry about what others THINK and it controls your mind and keeps it in that loop of self doubt!
The problem with all this?
The problem with PEOPLE PLEASING is it pushes you further and further away from your authentic self and you start to lose track of who YOU really are and what YOU really want and desire.
You are not too old and it’s not too late to change this pattern. I’m building something super cool for you that will help you truly get back to the authentic YOU.

Supra Natural: The Return of the Vaunted Toyota Sports Car
Summer is the season for reboots, remakes, and sequels. This month, Toyota embraces that Hollywood idea with a new version of the Supra—a sports car with a familiar name. And it makes sense. The Supra is kind of a silver screen star: The swoopy, rear-winged, readily modified coupe became a pop culture phenomenon when it co-starred in 2001’s The Fast and the Furious. That was three years after Toyota stopped selling the Supra in the U.S.: Seems that supporting the high-volume, less-fun Corolla and Camry offered a clearer path to owning the market.
7 Things You Need to Know About the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta »
But now, Toyota wants its halo back—even class dominance can get boring. So to defray the costs of a pricey Supra redevelopment program, Toyota teamed with BMW. The two automakers outlined a platform that split into two vehicles: BMW’s Z4 roadster and this fifth-generation Supra. The cars share engines and some architecture and hardware, but they are dramatically different beasts—the Z4 is a grand-touring convertible, the Supra a track-tuned coupe.
Get past the over-the-top-ness of the car’s array of inlets and outlets, and you find a machine that is pretty subtle. In an era of excess, the Supra’s inline six-cylinder makes 335 horsepower—plenty for real-world driving scenarios.
What It’s Like to Drive the 2019 Jaguar I-Pace »
Practicality aside, the Supra is still fun from behind the wheel. It’s weighted 50/50 front to rear, so on the track it flicks around corners, changing course like a water strider. That’s the result of Toyota going with a shorter wheelbase and wider track than any production sports car, and a body that’s even lighter than the last Supra. It feels like the car’s aerodynamics, rather than its computer interventions, help you keep things straight while you’re dancing on the edge. This is an increasingly rare quality. Vintage, you might say.
The Supra is equally delectable on back roads: Gun it in Sport mode and the exhaust roars, crackles, and pops as the chassis hangs tight in the curves. You find yourself cursing double-yellow no-pass zones and relishing blind corners. We’re in an era when nuance doesn’t sell, yet this car has it. We hope it survives. Toyota: Just get one in Vin Diesel’s garage—whatever it takes.

Zappos Has Awesome Summer Slip-ons, Slides, Sandals, and Sneakers On Sale
Zappos is renowned for having an awesome selection of boots and dress shoes, but its wide variety of sneakers and summer kicks don’t get nearly as much love. And that’s a shame. Zappos is a fantastic destination to get all your summer gear, from shirts and shorts to sandals and flip-flops. And it’s almost always cheaper than retail. So if you can find gear on sale at Zappos? That means it’s WAY less than you’d pay at the shoe store.
And these aren’t knock-offs like you find at some of the big box stores. Zappos doesn’t rip brands off, or steal their designs. Zappos gets great deals on overstock from manufacturers and retailers, then spins that savings back around to you. So you can get the same great products you saw in the store just a couple of months prior for a fraction of the price.
Does Zappos Sell More Than Shoes?
What started as an online shoe reseller has turned into a retail empire. Zappos now sells clothing, bags, accessories, and much more. The company has been instrumental in the rebirth of downtown Las Vegas, Nevada, and is widely recognized as an awesome place to work. It puts a premium on company culture, too. So you know when you buy from Zappos you’re buying from a responsible retailer that takes care of its customers and employees—not some fly-by-night operation that might be gone next week or doesn’t answer the phone or email if you have an issue.
So get your feet into something sweet this summer, and pick up one of these awesome summer shoes from Zappos. Most of these selections have multiple colors, styles, and sizes available, so there’s something for everyone.
Whether you spend your summer weekends sipping Negronis in the Hamptons or jumping off cliffs at Copper Canyon, get over to Zappos and get some sensible summer shoes today.
Here’s a great place to start.

Life Advice from Tom Waits
Iconic singer-songwriter-actor Tom Waits, now co-starring in the zombie flick The Dead Don’t Die, talks about kids who won’t listen, being a good liar, and that time the Dalai Lama ran off with his wife—all in the latest Life Advice column.
What’s the best advice you ever received?
Milk, milk, lemonade. Around the corner, fudge is made.
OK. Who were your heroes growing up?
Rod Serling; David Janssen, from The Fugitive; Cantinflas—he was a Mexican comedian. Boris Karloff, Marty Robbins, Lenny Bruce, Ken Nordine.
Life Advice From Christopher Walken »
That’s a pretty diverse group. What do you think they have in common?
Who knows? My dad left our family when I was about 11, so a lot of the men in my life that I looked up to were father figures.
How should a person handle getting older?
You don’t have to handle getting older. Getting older handles you. It starts pushing you down into the ground, so you have to kind of turn yourself like a drill—to pull yourself out of the hole. Getting older, it’s not for sissies.
How should a man handle criticism?
Say, “I know you are, but what am I? I know you are, but what am I?”
What role should vanity play in a man’s life?
You find a mirror that you look good in.
Life Advice From Willie Nelson »
What living person do you most admire?
The Dalai Lama. I met him in New York City many years ago. I played a benefit and I got to meet His Holiness backstage. I guess I would be considered His Weirdness. His Weirdness met His Holiness. He took a look at me and started laughing. Then I introduced him to my wife, and he took her by the hand and walked off into the crowd and was gone for an hour and a half. I have no idea what happened between them, but…it was just an amusing moment.
You’ve been with your wife, Kathleen Brennan, for decades now. What’s the secret to a long and happy relationship?
Fall in love and stay in love. Handle the curves. It’s all about the long game, you know?
Who has been the single biggest influence on your life?
My wife. Her wisdom, her humor, and just hanging in there with me.
Is it ever OK for a person to lie?
It’s part of the creative process. You have to learn how to lie, and to lie well, in order not to be detected.
What is the best cure for heartache?
Here’s a sentence that will help: “Tony, be a darling, won’t you, and fix me a martini with a twist.” Got it?
Who would you invite to your dream dinner party?
Thelonious Monk. Jack Benny. Rin Tin Tin, for the scraps. Chef Boyardee. Skip James. Fellini. Yoko Ono, Nina Simone, Grace Jones, and Anthony Quinn. And Walter Huston. That’s a good group. You better have plenty of gin and vermouth.
Life Advice from George Clinton »
What piece of advice would you give your younger self?
Hang in there. Your skin will clear up, and one of these days, you’re gonna be a dude. And watch more Twilight Zones.
What’s the most challenging part about being a father?
Your kids don’t really listen to a word you say, but they pay a great deal of attention to how you are living your life. And if there’s a discrepancy between what you’re telling them and how you’re living your own life, you lose your audience.
How do you want to be remembered when you’re gone?
It would be kind of puffed-up to be thinking only about how I want to be remembered by the public. I’m more concerned with how I would want to be remembered by my family—with affection, you know?

We Found the Best Sound Machines for Men
Sleep is the key to health, fitness, and—dare we say it?—happiness. If you’re having trouble relaxing after a long day, recovering after a grueling workout, or just sleeping at night, a sound machine can help. Here are some of the best sound machines for men.
No matter what you do all day long, when it’s all said and done you need to find that quiet space and let the troubles rinse off your back. Whether that place is the gym, on a run, in a yoga class, or just lying in bed with the lights out, blocking out the noise of the world is a necessity for a clear head and a calm focus on what lies ahead tomorrow.
You’ve got to let your body recharge when the day is done—and the only way to do that is rest and relaxation. White noise is scientifically proven to help people relax and/or focus, and a sound machine is the perfect way to achieve that distraction-free tranquility.
What’s the Best White Noise?
Whether you choose the soothing whoosh of a fan, the soft tinkle of a bubbling stream, or the pleasant wash of a rainstorm, white noise can help flush away life’s distractions and quickly get you in your tranquil zone. From there, it’s up to you: sleep, read, cook, play your guitar, tinker on a project, or watch TV. Whatever it takes to unwind, now you’re in the perfect position to do it.
They’re also great for athletes and athletic recovery. If you’re in training for an event or just dedicated to a fit life, recovery is essential. You can’t get back out there and do it again tomorrow if you’re still feeling blasted from yesterday. A hard fitness regimen requires recovery, and a great night’s sleep is the key. Wind down from a grueling workout and find your inner peace with one of these awesome sound machines.

Diabetic Diet Plan: How to Control Diabetes
Diabetic Diet Plan: How to Control Diabetes HealthifyMe Blog HealthifyMe Blog - The definitive guide to weightloss, fitness and living a healthier life.
Diabetes is a lifestyle disorder where one’s blood glucose or blood sugar levels are too high. Some of the symptoms of the disorder include increased thirst, urination, hunger, fatigue, blurred vision, and unexplained weight loss. The disorder and its symptoms can be brought under control by following a well-planned diabetic diet chart.
There are two types of diabetes – type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes. The former is more common among children, and in this case, the pancreas does not produce any insulin. The latter is considered the milder type of diabetes since the pancreas produces at least some insulin but it is normally not enough.
While it is a dangerous disease, understanding how to control diabetes is crucial. Following the right diet, and taking good care of your body plays a key role in controlling the disorder.
Table of Contents
Diabetic Diet Food List
Certain foods help lower blood sugar levels, and this helps them play a major role in controlling diabetes. It is also extremely beneficial to consume foods that play a role in preventing diabetes complications like heart and kidney diseases. These 10 diabetic diet foods can play a major role in bringing the disorder under control.
Leafy Greens
Green, leafy vegetables are low in calories, while also being extremely nutritious. Being low in digestible carbs means that they play a major role in controlling blood sugar levels too. Spinach, kale and other leafy greens are rich in several vitamins and minerals like vitamin C. One study showed that increasing vitamin C intake reduced the fasting blood sugar levels for people with type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure levels.
Cinnamon
Along with its strong antioxidant properties, cinnamon is also known for its ability to control diabetes. According to several controlled studies, cinnamon can help reduce blood sugar levels and improve insulin sensitivity as well.
Care must be taken to limit your intake of cassia cinnamon to less than a single teaspoon a day. The presence of coumarin in this type of cinnamon has been linked to health problems at higher doses. On the other hand, Ceylon cinnamon does not contain much coumarin.
Fatty Fish
Salmon, sardines and mackerel are great sources of DHA and EPA, which are omega-3 fatty acids with major heart health benefits. Improving the intake of these fats could particularly benefit diabetics with a higher risk of heart disease.
DHA and EPA help reduce inflammation markers, improve the way the arteries function after meals, and protect the cells lining the blood vessels. Studies have shown that older men and women that eat fatty fish more than 5 times a week for 8 weeks had significant reductions in triglyceride levels and inflammatory markers. They also contain high quality protein that helps you feel full for longer, and increases your metabolic rate.
Chia Seeds
Chia seeds are extremely rich in fiber, yet contain less digestible carbs. The viscous fiber found in these seeds lowers blood sugar levels by slowing down the rate at which food is moving through the gut and getting absorbed.
Additionally, the fiber present in chia seeds also helps one feel full, and in the process, prevents overeating and unnecessary weight gain. Chia seeds have also been shown to reduce blood pressure and inflammatory markers.
Greek Yogurt
Greek yogurt is a great dairy option for diabetics, given its ability to control blood sugar levels and reduce the risk of heart disease. This is partly due to the presence of probiotics in them.
Studies have also found that yogurt and other dairy products can result in weight loss and better body composition among people with type 2 diabetes. Greek Yogurt contains less carbs than conventional yogurt while also being richer in protein. The high protein content promotes weight loss by helping one feel full for longer and thus, reducing calorie intake.
Flaxseeds
Flaxseeds contain insoluble fiber made up of lignans, which reduces heart disease risk and improve blood sugar control. A study showed that people with type 2 diabetes that consumed flaxseed lignans for 12 weeks experienced a major improvement in hemoglobin A1c.
Another study suggested that a higher intake of flaxseed can lower the risk of strokes. Their high viscous fiber content helps improve gut health, insulin sensitivity, and the feeling of fullness in the body.
Nuts
All nuts contain fiber, and are low in digestible fiber, although they may have them in varying levels. Research on various types of nuts has shown that their consumption can reduce inflammation, and lower HbA1c, blood sugar and LDL levels in the body.
One study showed that people with diabetes who included 30 g of walnuts in their daily diet for a whole year lost weight, saw improvements in their body composition, and significantly lowered their insulin levels.
People with type 2 diabetes often have high insulin levels, and this is linked with obesity. Researchers also believe that extremely high insulin levels increases one’s risk of serious diseases like Alzheimer’s disease or cancer.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Although it’s made from apples, the sugar content in the fruit is fermented into acetic acid, with the resulting product containing very less carbs.
Apple cider vinegar tends to improve insulin sensitivity and lower fasting blood sugar levels. It can also reduce blood sugar levels by as much as 20% when consumed with meals that contain carbs. One study showed that people with poorly controlled diabetes saw a 6% reduction in fasting blood sugar levels when they had two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar before sleeping.
Garlic
Garlic is known to have some impressive health benefits. Some studies have shown that it can reduce inflammation, blood sugar and LDL levels in people that have type 2 diabetes. It can also be very effective in reducing blood pressure levels in the body. In addition to that, garlic is also low in calories. A single clove of it contains only 4 calories with just 1 gram of carbs.
Strawberries
Strawberries are rich in anthocyanins, the antioxidants that give them their red colour. These antioxidants have been shown to reduce insulin and cholesterol levels right after a meal. They also reduce the risk of increased blood sugar levels and heart diseases in type 2 diabetes patients.
A single cup of strawberries contain 49 calories and only 11 grams of carbs, 3 of which are fiber. This serving also ensures that one gets more than 100% of their required daily intake of vitamin C, thus providing additional anti-inflammatory benefits for heart health.
