You will find a lot of people in your social circle who have gone gluten free. Some of them might be suffering from a medical ailment and must have been advised to stop consuming gluten. And then there is the other group of people who have given away gluten to clear their brain fog, to increase energy or to lose weight. Research does not have much to say about these claims. 1) What is the real reason to avoid gluten?

There is a need to avoid gluten only if you are gluten intolerant. Evidence related to gluten sensitivity is mixed as patients who say that they have this condition usually don’t display an immunological response to gluten. The real problem can be IBS or some sort of gastrointestinal disorder. It is therefore essential to talk to your doctor about it.

2) Why is it challenging to go gluten free?

It can be challenging to avoid gluten as many foods have traces of gluten in them. It does not stop with wheat, barley and rye. The list includes spices, soups in cans, vodka, beer, soya sauce, cold cuts, sausages, dairy-free yoghurts, ice-cream, and energy bars. Therefore, by choosing to go gluten free, your diet gets very restrictive.

3) Gluten-free alternatives may not be healthy

You must be aware that the grocery store has a lot of gluten-free alternatives to offer such as gluten-free breads, cookies and the like. Those with celiac disease might feel happy on spotting these but the harsh reality is that these foods are highly processed and have a lot of added sugar, salt and fat. It is better to opt for foods that are naturally gluten-free.

4) Going gluten free does not mean that you can’t eat grains

If you go gluten free, there are several grains that you can consume and they are,

  • Amaranth
  • Buckwheat
  • Corn
  • Millet
  • Rice/wild rice
  • Sorghum
  • Quinoa
  • Oats (check if they have been contaminated with wheat while getting processed)

All the above are great sources of fibre and should be a part of your diet.

5) Giving up gluten may lead to weight gain

Those who think that by giving up gluten you will lose weight, you may be wrong. There are chances of putting on weight. This is because avoiding your favourite foods will make you binge on them later. Another reason of weight gain is the increased intake of fat and protein and both of them lack fibre.

6) Avoiding gluten is not a cure for your ailment

Gluten will not cause inflammation if you are not gluten intolerant. This has nothing to do with your skin problems, tiredness or inability to lose weight.

7) Avoiding gluten might make you feel tired and miss out on nutrients

Going gluten free will make you feel tired as whole grains are a great source of energy and a diet that does not include them is not balanced. You may also have nutrient deficiencies.

If have to go gluten free, you must add gluten-free gains and foods rich in probiotics to your diet.
