Bell peppers also known as capsicum in India are native to Central America and Mexico.

Green bell peppers are picked before they are fully ripe. If they are left on the plant to mature, green bell peppers generally turn red. They are mildly bitter in taste as compared to the red, yellow and orange ones.

The red bell peppers are a rich source of carotenoid phytonutrients. They contain about eleven times more beta-carotene than green bell peppers. They also have one and a half times more vitamin C than the green one. They have a sweet, juicy and fruity taste.

Culinary uses:

Fresh raw bell peppers are used as vegetables in cuisines all over the world. They are enjoyed as salads or cooked in stir-fries. Bell peppers give a delicious twist to food flavour. In India they are mixed with other vegetables like potato, carrots, green beans etc., along with tomato and other spices to make several mouth-watering stir-fries. Red and yellow peppers if used with culinary imagination can taste exotic with a combination of cheese, meats, dried fruits, nuts. It must be cooked slightly so that the nutrients are not lost due to the heat.

Bell peppers are also added after being lightly grilled in various sauces, cheese, and olive oil based dips. Most of the world cuisines use bell peppers in stir fries, pasta and noodles.

Bell peppers are low calorie vegetables and valuable sources of health-supportive sulphur compounds.

It has certain enzymes that provide anti-cancer benefits. According to research bell peppers can reduce the risk of oesophageal and gastric cancers also.

The bell peppers are low in fat content. There is just 1 gram of total fat in one cup of bell pepper. But the fat is sufficient to store the fat soluble vitamin E and carotenoids present in it.

The carotenoids in bell peppers have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits for the body. A ripened red bell pepper has more vitamin C and carotenoids in it. We all know that Vitamin C is an excellent antioxidant.

It has also been known to reduce triglycerides and LDL cholesterol levels in obese people. The red bell pepper also has a remarkable amount of vitamin A. Not only that, Bell pepper has sufficient levels of essential minerals like iron, copper, manganese, magnesium, zinc, potassium and selenium. It is also rich in the B vitamins.

Keto Diet, Weight Loss and Bell peppers

Green bell pepper has just 20 calories whereas red bell pepper has 31. The net carbs content of red bell pepper is 3.93 g i.e. approx 4 g per 100 g serving. Green bell pepper has around 3 g of net carbs. Both have nil cholesterol. Red bell pepper has a higher content of potassium than green bell pepper. Protein content is more in red capsicum.

Sweet corn is also known as maize and is a very popular cereal grain throughout the world. No childhood and movies are complete without Popcorn and sweet corn. During winters no one can resist a bowl of buttered steaming bowl of sweet corn with a bowl of hot soup. Most of the dieters prefer that as a complete last meal of the day. Are you also one of those?

Sweet Corn Nutrition Facts

Apart from water, corn is chiefly composed of carbs and has a little bit of fat and protein.

Carbs yet low GI

Corn is a low-fat complex carbohydrate that deserves a regular place in any healthy meal plan. Regular corn has some amount of sugar though sweet corn is a special variety of corn which is low in starch but high in sugar. Most of its sugar is sucrose. In spite of high sugar content, sweet corn is low or medium on the GI (glycemic index).

Fibre

Corn has a good amount of fibre in it. If we consider a 112g pack of popcorn, it has about 16 g of fibre. That much of fiber can meet 42 percent of the daily intake for men and 64 percent of the for women.  It has insoluble fiber that tackles digestive ailments and aids weight loss.

Protein

Corn has a fair amount of protein in it. Though its protein content depends on its variety. Normally it ranges from 10 to 15 percent.

Oil

Corn is a low-fat food with a fat content of 5 to 6 percent. The side product of corn milling, the corn germ is rich in fat and is used to make corn oil. Corn oil is used for cooking. While consumption of whole corn is fine, but some say that corn oil is not a good idea.

Phosphorus

It is a mineral that is found in fair amounts in popcorn as well as sweet corn. It plays an important role in the growth and maintenance of the tissues of the body.

  • Fat – 0.9 (g)
  • Complex carbohydrates – 24.6(g)
  • Crude fibre – 1.9(g)

  • Riboflavin (Vitamin B2) – 0.17(mg)
  • Niacin (Vitamin B3) – 0.6(mg)
  • Vitamin C – 6(mg)

Weight Loss and Sweet Corn

Sweet corn can be a wonderful weight loss tool if used carefully. It adds bulk which helps us feel full sooner. Also it has enough fiber which stays in the stomach longer than other foods. This feeling of fullness stays with us much longer than other foods and thus helps to eat less. Apart from aiding weight loss, corn also provides required calories for improved metabolism.

Corn is wonderfully healthy food till the time we do not use any butter and sauces to it. As soon as we cover it in butter and other fatty sauces, there is a steep increase in the calorie and fat content of an already carbohydrate-rich food. So what needs to be done is, flavor corn with a variety of spices and further increase its already great nutritional value.

Boiling, steaming, microwaving and grilling are the best methods for preparing corn. Prepare corn wisely and aid weight loss.

  • 1 cup boiled/steamed corn

  • 1 small chopped onion

  • 1 small chopped tomato

  • Half chopped cucumber

Keto and Paleo are like siblings, pretty alike yet so different. Lol… what a start… hahaha. But frankly speaking these are two ways of eating to lose weight real quick. This is also a fact that both these diets are more effective in giving results to non vegetarian food eaters. As we all know that meat and eggs have the lowest amount of carbohydrates and highest amount of proteins. That is what is needed to lose weight on a Keto or Paleo diet along with fat. We keep sharing recipes to make things easy for dieters and here we are back with another Low Carb recipe. Low carb recipes are the basis of Keto as well as Paleo diet. This time it is Chicken Kheema. Kheema/Keema is one such dish which can be prepared in various ways.

Chicken Kheema recipe

Ingredients:

  • 500gms Chicken kheema
  • Ginger garlic paste: 1tbsp
  • Jeera: 1tsp
  • Cardomom pods : 2nos
  • Cinnamon: 2 small sticks
  • Onions: 2 large onions chopped finely
  • Tomato: 1medium sized chopped finely
  • Green chilies: 3nos
  • Cilantro/ Coriander leaves: as per taste
  • Salt: as per taste
  • Coconut milk: 4tbsp
  • Everest Chicken Masala: 2tsp
  • 1 bowl boiled green peas
  • Oil: 2tbsp
  • Lime: 1no

Recipe for Chicken Kheema

1.Pour the oil in a kadhai and add jeera, cardamom, cinnamon, ginger garlic paste, green chillies and fry till the ginger garlic paste turns browns.

2.Then add the onions and tomatoes and once the tomatoes go soft, add the boiled green peas. Cook on a low flame till the raw smell goes from the peas and/or the onion start to go light brown.

3. Add the coconut milk (optional) and salt.

4. Once the peas become soft, add kheema, mix and cook on a medium flame.

5. Add water if necessary. When the kheema is half done, add Chicken Masala (you can add any masala) and let it cook.

6. Once done, add coriander leaves, juice of 1 lime to the dish and Voila! The dish is ready to serve!

Really simple right?

If you make this dish in a kadhai, it might take around 30 mins to prepare. In pressure cooker the dish would be ready in 15 mins or so. You can continue to cook this on a medium flame if you don’t like it a charredthis way.

You can make mutton kheema the same way as well. Enjoy it alone or with a flax meal or any low carb roti. Make it in a nice roll and enjoy your weight loss journey.

Who is not fond of making quick recipes? I surely am and always hunting for quick recipes. Here we share 10 minutes Paleo/HPLC (High protein and low carbs) fish recipe as most of the people struggling with weight issues find a lot of trouble to explore Paleo diet friendly recipes.

Fish in Paleo/low carb high protein Diet:

Most of us know that fish is an important component of Paleo diet as it’s a great source of vitamins, minerals and omega 3 fatty acid. Keeping all the goodness of nutrition in mind, fish has proved to be the favourite of all the dieters following low carb high protein, low carb/ Paleo way of eating.

Although many people are afraid of indirect mercury consumption, leading to poisoning therefore proper precautions needs to be taken. Thumb rule is that higher the fish in food chain more concentrated the mercury is.  That means small fish generally have low concentration of mercury as compared to the big ones.

Easy 10 minutes Fish Recipe:

10 Minutes Fish Recipe|Paleo Diet India

 

Ingredients required:-

  • 3 Large tomatoes
  • 3-4 garlic cloves
  • One small onion
  • 1 small green chilli
  • Basa fish fillet  cut into small pieces of your choice.(Around 200gms)
  • Salt as per taste
  • Red chilli powder (as per taste)
  • 1tbsp. Coconut/olive oil( Any which you prefer in cooking)
  • Cumin seeds 1/2tsp (Optional)
  • Coconut milk  (200ml)

Method And Preparations:-

  • Step1 – Grind in a mixer, tomatoes, garlic cloves, onion and green chillies
  • Step2 – In a pan add coconut oil and when hot add cumin seeds
  • Step3 – Add the  tomato and onion paste and let it cook for 3-4 minutes.
  • Step4 – Add coconut milk and let it simmer for one minute or so
  • Step5 – Add fish into the coconut and tomato curry and let the fish cook for 4-5 minutes.

It hardly takes any time in making this recipe as there is no cutting or chopping involved.You just have to throw everything into the mixer to make paste of all ingredients  and that’s what makes it worth in this super busy lifestyle of ours 🙂

POLY CYSTIC OVARIAN SYNDROME (PCOS) is a very complex yet common endocrine disorder, commonly seen in women of age group of 12-45 yrs. (reproductive age). It is more like an epidemic these days as one in every three females is either suffering from PCOS or a thyroid disorder- (hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism).

What is PCOS?

  • At times ovaries in an ultrasound may look enlarged as it may contain many “small cysts”. These might be located on the outer edge of ovaries. These look like “a string of BEADS”.

PCOS diet

  • Ovaries fail to release eggs.
  • Higher level of male hormones than normal, or male hormones that are more active than normal

Even if only two of the above features are present, this is enough to confirm PCOS.

Why PCOS happens?

Cause is unknown. But mostly it is a genetic disorder or seen in families where members are suffering from diabetes, high cholesterol and obesity.

How can PCOS be diagnosed?

In most cases, getting the conclusive diagnosis of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome comes from the appearance of your ovaries in an ultrasound done by a doctor.

Here a special mention, in many cases ultrasound does not reveal PCOS. But, a person shows majorly all its symptoms.

Symptoms of PCOS

  • Irregular periods with weight gain
  • Excessive facial and body hair (hirsutism)
  • Problems in getting pregnant
  • Acne, Hair fall and Hair thinning
  • Insulin resistance – means the inability of body to use insulin effectively. This will result in high blood insulin levels causing PCOS.

Are PCOS and hypothyroidism related ?

 

Mostly females suffering from hypothyroidism have many symptoms in common with PCOS, such as “anovulation” i.e. menstruation without releasing an egg cell. A long term anovulation can be the cause of PCOS. Its related low progesterone is another cause of concern.

Treatment and Cure for PCOS

There’s no cure for PCOS, but the symptoms are treatable.

  • To help regulate the menstrual cycle and improve hair growth, specific contraceptive or drugs such as clomid and metformin may be prescribed by doctor.
  • Change in lifestyle, weight management becomes essential for health management.
  • Diet related changes also help in controlling its symptoms.

PCOS and Infertility

This is for all the beautiful women who are reading this and are struggling to start their families.

  • There are treatment options for infertility caused by PCOS.
  • There’s medication to increase ovulation which is to be taken under gynecologist guidance.

So the good news is many women with fertility problems due to PCOS can still have a baby.

Diet Instructions for PCOS women

  • Eat the right kind of food. Eat lots of vegetables, fruits and protein-rich food.
  • Have green vegetables as it contains a lot of folic acid in them. Folic acid is often advised by gynecologists to women who are planning to conceive or who already are pregnant.
  • Consume vitamin C-rich food by eating plenty of fruits like orange, lemon, sweet lime, grape-fruit, and grapes.
  • Alcohol and smoking is a big NO.
  • Eat whole-grain foods instead of processed, refined foods such as wheat flour (maida). Also, whole fruit instead of fruit juice will maintain insulin and blood sugar levels.
  • Avoid cakes, pastries, junk food, colas, jams and pickles.
  • Eat foods that are high in fiber as they will also cause a slower, more controlled rise in blood sugar and insulin levels.
  • Whole legumes and vegetables in your diet are a must.
  • Add fiber to help you manage your sugar levels.
  • Combine protein and carbohydrates as protein helps to regulate the blood sugar spike caused by the carbs.
  • Eat small, healthy meals more frequently to manage cravings and hunger pangs and NEVER miss breakfast!
  • Corn, soy, cottonseed, and grapeseed oils should be avoided.
  • Also avoid chemical in the form of preservatives, additives, artificial sweeteners and colorings.
