This Is Your Brain on Beer

It’s a brew lover’s worst nightmare: Just half a beer a day can reduce the volume of your brain and stress cognitive powers, per new research at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and University of Pennsylvania. That flies in the face of the National Institutes of Health recommendation that considers two drinks a day safe for men. What’s more, says study co-author Remi Daviet, Ph.D., the effects of alcohol on the brain rise exponentially with every additional drink.

“It’s not linear,” according to Daviet. “It gets worse the more you drink.”

To conduct their study, researchers analyzed brain MRIs for more than 36,000 people and compared them with surveys that participants filled out about their drinking habits. Researchers found that brain volume shrunk with every increasing drink, to the point that four drinks a day was equivalent to aging the brain by 10 years.

Worried, but not ready to give up your nightcap any time soon? It’s worth noting, says Daviet, that brain changes after just one unit of alcohol are minor—it’s when you start piling cocktail on top of cocktail that the real damage begins. Translation: Pour yourself a cold one and sip slowly. You’ll want to make this brewski last the night.

Thousand Traveler Magnetic Bike Lights Are a Must for City Cyclists

When I moved to Portland, OR this spring, one of my top priorities was upgrading my biking setup. My bike stayed in the closet for most of the pandemic, but after relocating to one of the country’s best bike cities, I was eager to explore on two wheels. First, I swapped my heavy vintage Bridgestone mountain bike for a sleek State All-Road gravel bike. I stocked up on a patch kit, multi-tool, lube, and saddle bag. The last thing on my fixer-upper list was to sift through my gear box in search of my old bike lights. But with daylight lasting as late as 9 p.m. in the summer, I put off the chore for another few months. Then the Thousand Traveler Magnetic Bike Lights hit the market, and I had to try them.

I’m a big fan of Thousand’s stylish helmets, so I wanted to find out for myself how the brand’s new accessories fared on city streets. After a few weeks of testing in the City of Roses, here are my takeaways.

The Coolest Pieces of Gear We Tested This Week

What It Is

Thousand is best known for its retro-inspired bike helmets, the Heritage and Chapter. The designs include creative and convenient features like a magnetic fastener, vegan-friendly straps, and a bike lock portal, so you can lock your bike and your helmet securely with a U-lock. Now the brand is applying that same attention to detail to bike lights. The Thousand Traveler Magnetic Bike Lights just launched in July 2022.

The lights ($70 for a front-rear set or $35 for one) mount to your seatpost and handlebars with a stretchy rubber loop fastener (as long as your post and bars aren’t larger than 35mm). Each light is about the size of a golf ball, and they can toggle between solid beam, flash, and eco flash settings. The front light delivers up to 250 lumens, while the back has a max of 80 lumens.

The best part: The lights use a magnetic attachment system, so they pop right out of their mounts when you’re done riding. This allows you to take your lights with you—so they don’t get stolen—without dismounting the entire mounting fixture (and remounting it every time you ride).

The lights are also rechargeable via a built-in USB-C port (a charge cable is included), and they’re water-resistant against light rain, which will come in handy once Portland’s sunny season comes to an end.

Why We Like It

In any size city, bike theft happens. If your whole bike isn’t stolen, smaller components like wheels, helmets, panniers, and lights can go missing if they aren’t locked down. Beefy bike locks can help deter theft of your bike, but until the Traveler Magnetic Bike Lights, the only way to prevent the theft of lights was by taking them off and putting them back on every time you ride.

I love that these new lights make that step a little bit easier. Because they’re so compact and lightweight, I stashed them in my backpack when I went to the climbing gym, and they even fit in the pockets of my shorts while I ran errands downtown.

That said, if I ever forget to take them off my bike and they did get snatched, I’d only be out $70 for the pair. At $35 per light, they’re on the affordable end of the bike lights spectrum.

Some bike lights have many different settings and buttons, which can add distractions to a ride. The Traveler Magnetic Bike Lights, however, are simple and straightforward. Each light has three settings (controlled by rotating the light itself), a convenient magnetic mount, and a hidden USB portal on the backside for charging. The three colors—Speedway Creme, Stealth Black, Thousand Navy—are minimalist while still allowing you to customize your look.

Now that I can procrastinate digging through storage for my old bike lights, I plan to use these as my main front and back lights for riding in the city. Let’s hope they last me many seasons (like my Thousand helmet has).

Nitpick

The magnetic mount requires some fiddling at first. It’s possible to attach the light to the mount upside down—you’ll know if the indicator markings don’t align on the light and the mount. Regardless, the light still functions properly even if you mount it upside down.

Additionally, the lumen output (depending on the light setting, 30, 100, or 250 in front and 10, 35, or 80 in back) is perfect for riding in the city, where there’s spillover light from traffic, businesses, and streetlights. But if you’re planning to ride unlit roads or trails, you’ll definitely need more powerful lights; consider a model with a minimum lumen rating of 400.

The Best Full-Body Dumbbell Workout

When you don’t have a long list of options in your home gym—or it’s rush hour at your local gym and most of the equipment is taken—you’ve gotta be prepared. Most people can get access to a few pairs of dumbbells, an adjustable bench, and floor space. If you can do that, then this full-body dumbbell workout will tick all the boxes for awesome conditioning.

The Workout

What You Need: A pair of light, medium, and heavy dumbbells, an adjustable bench, and some space to do your thing.

Directions: This workout will take about 45 minutes to complete. It utilizes supersets to keep things efficient, bring the heart rate up, and pump up your muscle volume. Each exercise pairing starts with a large movement followed by a smaller movement that’s less physically taxing to ensure you don’t run out of steam before the end. The two exercises are performed back-to-back with zero rest between them. Once you complete the second exercise in the pairing, rest for the prescribed amount of time. Then repeat the superset. The supersets are listed as A1 and A2, B1 and B2, and so on.

  • A1. Dumbbell B-Stance Squat x 10 (each leg): Grab a heavier dumbbell and hold it vertically with both hands, as you would for a goblet squat. Keeping your feet roughly shoulder-width apart, put all your weight on one foot and then place your other foot slightly behind you (only your toe should be touching the ground). Maintaining a tall, upright torso, descend into a squat position while keeping your weight centered over your front leg. The other leg can bend out to the side as you go into the bottom of the squat.
  • A2. Bentover Reverse Flye x 12: Use your lightest dumbbells. Position yourself with your feet shoulder-width apart, and then bend over at the hips while maintaining a flat spine. Hold the dumbbells with your arms fully extended straight down below you; keep the palms facing toward each other. In one motion, squeeze the shoulder blades together and fly the weights apart and up to shoulder level while keeping your arms extended. Look for a deep contraction in the upper back and postural muscles. Keep your eyes down in order to keep the neck in alignment with the rest of your back.
  • Perform A1 and A2 as a superset for 3 rounds. Rest 60 seconds between rounds.

  • B1. Dumbbell Romanian Deadlift x 10: These are just like typical deadlifts (see here for an explainer), except the Romanian style asks for straighter knees. Keep in mind that straighter knees usually mean the lower back rounds a bit earlier in the movement, so it’s OK if you don’t go down as far with the dumbbells in your hands. Use your heavy dumbbells for this. Hold a dumbbell in each hand while standing with feet shoulder-width apart. In a controlled motion and with a straight back, bend at the hips and lower the dumbbells; keep your arms straight. Squeeze the glutes and hamstrings to drive back up to the top position. Remember to brace your core and upper back to keep from slouching.
  • B2. Dumbbell Z-Press x 10: Sit on the floor with your torso straight up and hold your medium-weight dumbbells at shoulder level. Spread the legs apart to ensure the torso remains tall and there’s no slouching or spinal curvature—think proud chest. While maintaining this posture, press the weights up overhead, similar to a typical military press. You have no back support, so continuously brace the core to maintain positioning. It’s harder than it sounds!
  • Perform B1 and B2 as a superset for 3 rounds. Rest 60 seconds between rounds.
  • C1. Dumbbell Reverse Lunge x 10 (each leg, alternating): Hold a dumbbell in each hand with feet shoulder-width apart. Extend one leg out backward and lower your body down—keep your torso straight and upright and bend the front knee forward as you descend. Use your front quad to drive back upward to the start position.
  • C2. Single-Arm Dumbbell Snatch x 6 (each arm, alternating): Use a heavy dumbbell and hold it with one arm at shin level between the knees. Keep a perfectly flat spine, and bend the legs to a half-squat stance. In one big motion, “throw” the weight up to a full overhead position, using your arm as little as possible. This movement is led by the body and the momentum you put into the weight with your legs and torso. Finish in a tall overhead press position, and lower the weight to the shoulder before returning to the start position.
  • Perform C1 and C2 as a superset for 3 rounds. Rest 90 seconds between rounds.

Best Binoculars for Wildlife Viewing, Hunting, and Stargazing

Whether it’s discerning a distant brown blob from a lioness on a safari, looking for inclement weather over the horizon while boating, or figuring out who’s warming up in the bullpen, binoculars’ only job are to bring details into focus. So it’s ironic that shopping for a pair is full of numbers, mathematical equations, optical jargon, and marketing nonsense. Any pair will bring things into focus, but you want ones that fit your budget, and pack everything you need and nothing you don’t. Here’s a quick primer on what those numbers actually mean and how they can inform your purchase depending on your needs.

Just how close and clear your view will get mostly depends on two numbers: The first is magnification power. The higher the number, the more powerful the binoculars. All 8 power binoculars (8×21, 8×32, 8×42, etc.) will make an object appear eight times closer than with the naked eye. The second number is the objective lens width. The higher this number, the wider the binoculars’ lens is and the more light enters the optics. A high number like 50mm is best for low-light situations, while 21 is better for packability.

For many, the next most important number is cost. Binoculars range in price from less than $100 to several thousand dollars. The spectrum reflects materials and workmanship—while all 8×32 binoculars will bring the same object into focus, like with cameras and watches, the high-end ones have noticeably better clarity, function, and durability.

After that, shopping for binoculars is all about the little details. The more specific a purpose, the more you’ll want to focus on things like construction, field of view, exit pupil, and prism design. Go ahead and nerd out—or keep it simple. Either way, binoculars will greatly enhance your viewing pleasure, no matter the application.

Everyday Carry Essentials for Adventurers

Having a pocketful of essential tools you use often is what the whole everyday carry movement is all about. You need to keep some items close for convenience, or to deal with unexpected emergencies—kind of an extension of the Boy Scout motto of “Be Prepared.” The typical everyday carry stash consists of a knife, watch, wallet, and some kind of key retention device like a hook or carabiner, along with optional gear like a pen and flashlight.

Most popular everyday carry assemblies skew toward the tactical side of things, with everything taking on a quasi-military look and feel, but what you carry every day can run through a wide range of styles, from big and burly to refined and elegant. Our list includes both (and everything in between).

The best part about gathering a variety of EDC gear is you can mix and match depending on your mood, environment, or adventure, so pick a few favorites from the items below.

The Best Cycling Jerseys to Keep You Riding All Year Long

When most people think about getting serious about cycling—whether it’s road riding or tackling trails—their first thought is, “I need a new bike.” While your set of wheels is certainly important, the clothes you wear have a big affect on your performance in the saddle, too. It’s not just about looking the part. If you want to push yourself, it’s a good idea to invest in some proper cycling jerseys.

Jerseys—and the bib shorts that go along with them—are specifically designed for superior comfort and aerodynamics while riding. A normal athletic shirt will feel baggy and create drag when you’re in the riding position, and you definitely don’t want anything slowing you down. Cycling jerseys are also designed to keep you cool as you ride (or keep you warm in cold weather).

Features to Look For on Cycling Jerseys

Features to consider include fit, number of pockets, and material. Some jerseys are made with fabric that locks in warmth on cold days (like merino wool), while others have mesh panels to increase air circulation in the hotter months. It’s also a good idea to consider the type of riding you’ll be doing in the jersey. For bikepacking, more pockets might come in handy. For road riding, you might prefer a sleeker, aerodynamic cut. And for mountain biking, look for jerseys with reinforced material that won’t tear when you take a tumble or whiz by brambles.

Whether you’re picking out your first jersey or you’ve got a drawer full of them, we’ve got you covered. From insulating tops for cold weather to ultralight layers, we scoured the internet to find some of the best cycling jerseys, including offerings from well-known brands like MAAP and Rapha and lesser-known gems like Ornot and Ostroy.

The Best Bench Press Variations to Spice Up Your Lifting Routine

The bench press in its standard form is fun while it lasts, but repeating the same style of the lift from week to week can be monotonous. It can also stymie your gains, or at least slow down your rate of change.

We all know the standard execution of a proper bench press (if not, check out this step-by-step explainer), and it’s a good exercise. But after a while, you’ll need to mix it up with different loading techniques, rep schemes, and modalities to keep stimulating your muscles and build strength. The bench press variations below are great ways to shake up your typical bench routine.

The Best Bench Press Variations to Spice Up Your Lifting Routine

1. 1.5-Rep Bench Press

For this, you’ll still need a standard barbell bench press setup. Either use a bench press rack or create one by sliding a bench and safety latches to the appropriate places in a squat cage. To perform a 1.5-rep bench press, unrack the weight and lower it to the chest in a controlled motion. Pause for half a second, and then move the barbell up, stopping halfway between a fully lowered position and an arms-extended position (the top of a typical bench press). Hold that halfway position for a second. Next, lower the bar to the chest, pause, and then raise the bar to a full extension. All of that is 1 rep.

Focusing on sets of 3 to 5 reps using this style is ideal. Remember, the time spent under tension for each rep is much longer than standard bench press.
The 1.5-rep bench press works well for chest hypertrophy and strength because the half-rep portions of the lift double the chest stimulation before the triceps fully enter the movement. From a mechanical perspective, it’s the perfect way to really focus the bench press on the chest muscles.

2. Paused Reps

Pausing mid-rep makes a standard bench press much more honest. The how-to is simple: Lower the weight to the chest under control, and then simply freeze for 2 to 3 seconds on the chest. While doing so, be sure to remain tight, and don’t allow your chest to sink in toward the bench while paused.

Pausing removes the stretch reflex that most lifters use to help “sling” the weight up out of the bottom position of the bench press rep. Removing it kills any momentum and makes each lift happen from absolute zero.

For paused reps of any sort, be sure to reduce the weight accordingly. Your 5-rep max with normal weight won’t be your paused 5RM. Reduce the weight by 15 to 20 percent and focus on managing proper technique.

3. Pin Press

The pin press isn’t just a wicked strength builder, it’s also a very smart way to protect your shoulders. That’s especially important if you have a history of shoulder injury (this move is also helpful if you have long arms). In a pin press, the barbell gets blocked by safety latches (pins) before it reaches chest level, so the shoulders are spared from a vulnerable bottom position deep in the hole.

Place a bench in a squat cage and set the safety latches about 3 to 5 inches above the level of your chest. Place the bar on the latches and slide into position under the bar so it’s positioned over your nipple line. Draw the shoulder blades together, grip the bar, and drive it up to full extension. Hold at the top for a 1-second count. Lower the bar back to the pins, and let it settle before commencing the next rep. Pause another second and repeat. Use sets of 3 to 6 reps for increased strength.

4. Cluster Sets

Clusters are a great way to squeeze more work out of your muscles with heavy weight. The science behind this variation is simple. Taking a small break midway through a heavy set allows your energy stores to partially rejuvenate themselves. That gives your muscles just enough juice to squeeze out an extra rep or two.

To do them, load the barbell to your 5-rep max weight. Perform 4 reps before racking the bar. Rest for 15 seconds, take the weight back off the rack, and perform 2 more reps to complete a set. You’ve just performed 6 reps with your 5-rep max. Be sure to rest well between sets—2 minutes at a minimum. Do 4 cluster sets total.

5. Cable Bench Press

Switching to cables in a cable rack instead of a barbell bench press creates a flurry of benefits when it comes to hypertrophy. First, cables force each side of your body to work individually. This creates a very different demand on stability for each shoulder and also makes each pectoral muscle responsible for its own load. Second, the direction of force is different with cables than with a barbell, which can be beneficial. In most cable stations, the pulleys will be set out much wider than a lifter’s shoulder width. That angle aligns better with the actual direction the pectoral muscle fibers travel—the pec’s role is to adduct the upper arm (or pull it inward toward the body). Doing a bench press with cables combines a typical press pattern with a flye pattern because of the constant inward tension you’ll have to apply throughout each rep.

There are few more effective training options for chest hypertrophy than using a pair of cables. Combine this move with lower rest intervals (or create a superset or compound set with another press pattern, like pushups) and you have a surefire recipe for building muscle. Keep reps a bit higher here; sets of 12 to 15 reps will elicit an awesome pump.

The Best Week 1 College Football Games to Watch This Season

The 2022 college football season will soft-launch with “Week 0” on Saturday, Aug. 27. That day’s mini-schedule has a few college football games that might wind up being fun. Others might at least be instructive, like Nebraska playing Northwestern in Ireland, which could offer a hint at whether Scott Frost is finally going to turn a corner in his fifth season as the Huskers head coach.

But the real meat of the season’s opening starts the Thursday before Labor Day and continues through a long weekend that college football gets all to itself (the NFL will be a week from kicking off its regular season). A full Week 1 schedule is here, and below are eight college football games that I think will be particularly interesting to watch during that stretch. Don’t consider this a list of the juiciest matchups between the highest-ranked teams—those rankings will be useless a few weeks after the season starts anyway. Instead, think of it as a list of games that might teach us something about the teams involved.

Let’s start with the first one of the week.

The Summit 3 also boasts guided breathing and meditation exercises, and the fitness tracker can even tell you how long you need to rest in order to recover from your last workout. It’s water-resistant to 50 meters, so it can stand up to splashes, rain, and the occasional light swim. In the gym or the office, it’s a capable performer.

Sure, it doesn’t have the charm or the legacy of a true mechanical watch, but with its classic looks and modern convenience, the Summit 3 is a compelling offering if you want to dip a toe (or more accurately, a wrist) into the world of smartwatches.

How to Bench Press: Everything You Need to Know

Welcome to Do It Right, a series where we cover essential fitness skills that everyone should know. From deadlifts to bicep curls and beyond, each Do It Right post calls on expert advice to help you learn something new in the gym.

The Skill: Bench Press

The barbell bench press might be the most popular exercise on the planet (even if it shouldn’t be). It’s no secret that when someone says they work out, the most common first question that follows is “How much do you bench?” While the bench press shouldn’t take priority over other movements, let’s be honest: You’ll probably want to work this move into your routine, if you haven’t already. With that in mind, it’s best to learn to do it right.

The Expert

Lee Boyce, Toronto-based strength coach, speaker, owner of Lee Boyce Training Systems, college professor, and internationally published fitness writer.

What You Need

A barbell, weight plates, and a bench press station. The average gym will most likely have one. Gyms that don’t usually allow you to slide a bench into a squat cage and use the cage’s hooks to create a bench rack.

Read article

How to Do It

  1. Start with your points of contact. For a bench press to work well and hit the right muscle groups, the initial setup is key. When laying down on the bench, look for five points of contact: Both feet firmly on the ground, and the butt, upper back, and head firmly on the bench. None of these points should ever move. You’ll notice the lower back isn’t included in the list. That’s because it doesn’t belong on the bench. When you prepare to move the bar, arch the lower back (not excessively, but enough to make you feel tight and snug) and draw the shoulder blades together. Position yourself on the bench so that your eyes are under the bar.
  2. Get a grip. This will vary depending on your arm length. Most Olympic barbells have rings on both sides of the bar to indicate how far apart to place your hands and keep them even on the bar. The goal is for your elbows to form a 90-degree angle when you’re at the bottom of your lifting motion. If you’re a shorter lifter with shorter arms, it’s best to place your hands inside the indicator rings to get the proper angle. If you have longer arms, place your hands as wide as necessary to get the proper elbow angles. Once you’ve selected a grip that works—do a few practice reps using the empty bar to see what’s most comfortable—it’s time to focus on the movement itself.
  3. Lower the bar. Start with the bar positioned right above the shoulders with arms completely locked out. Apply tension to the bar, either inward or outward (there’s benefits to both kinds of tension). Arch your lower back and draw your shoulder blades together, and maintain tension on the bar as you lower the weight slowly to the chest. Aim for the nipple line as your point of gentle contact on the torso. Once you’ve reached the bottom position, add one underutilized cue: Pause for a full one-second count. That’ll help keep your lift honest.
  4. Lift the bar. Remember that you’re pushing the bar away from the floor, not your chest. Driving through your feet into the ground as you press the weight up and away is essential to a strong, quality bench press. Push down with your feet and exhale as you move the bar up. The weight should travel on a slight angle backward to finish above the shoulders, where it started. Keep your shoulder blades drawn together throughout the movement—don’t slacken them to get greater “reach” at the top of the rep. Keep the lift tight and compact. That’s one rep.

If you’re going for strength, focus on sets of 3 to 6 paused reps, and aim to gradually increase the weight you’re lifting each week. If you’re after increased muscle size, up the rep range to sets of 8 to 12, and lower the rest interval a notch (about 90 seconds between sets).

Celebrate National Tequila Day With These Crafty Canned Cocktails

As if you need another excuse to drink tequila. Nonetheless, here it is. This Sunday, July 24, is National Tequila Day. Given that Monday isn’t the most ideal day to be hungover, may we suggest foregoing straight tequila shots this year and opting for a canned tequila cocktail with lower ABV and exactly the sort of no-fuss, super-tasty, legit craft experience you’re looking for on a National Tequila Day Sunday? Here are ten of our favorites. Salud!

1. Onda Tequila Seltzer

An extended moment of Zen awaits all sippers of this 5% ABV sipper co-founded by actor Shay Mitchell. Each can of Onda Tequila Seltzer contains 100% Blanco tequila sourced from a women-owned and operated distillery in Jalisco, Mexico—and just 100 calories. Crafted with real fruit juice and zero added sugar, Onda’s round of flavors are bound to please any kind of palate. Lime, Blood Orange, Watermelon, Grapefruit, Mango, Passion Fruit, Pineapple, and Strawberry are on the current lineup—and good luck having just one. Onda is also available for same-day delivery from Minibar, GoPuff, and Drizly.

2. SouthNorte Crafted Cocktails

Palomas, Mexican mules, and one of our favorite underappreciated tequila cocktails—the Matador (tequila, pineapple, lime, club soda)—have all found a home with San Diego-based SouthNorte. The lauded maker of Mexican-style craft beers now crafts these 7% ABV premium cocktails with premium tequila and lime in all three offerings. Company brewmaster Ryan Brooks honed his craft in Baja before returning home to San Diego, so you know this casa takes the art of Mexico-inspired, canned craft cocktails seriously.

3. Madre Mezcal Madre Desert Water

Of course, tequila’s smoky cousin mezcal will be making its way onto this list. A riff on West Texas “ranch water” (tequila, lime juice, and preferably Topo Chico sparkling mineral water), Madre Mezcal’s 5% ABV Madre Desert Water is a mix of Madre Espadin mezcal, sparkling water, real fruit, plants, herbs, and no artificial flavoring or colors. Of the four current flavors, our personal favorite is Grapefruit and Yerba Santa. But grab a variety pack so you can also try the Original, Prickly Pear and Lemon, and Mushroom, Sage, and Honey.

The Best Running Socks to Help You Go the Distance

Once you’ve slipped on a pair of premium, cushioned, no-slip running socks, you can never go back to the low-quality junk. While other clothing essentials like tees and shoes get most of the attention, quality running socks are also essential for top performance.

The right pair of socks will help keep your feet comfortable no matter how far you’re running or how challenging the weather. Although they might seem simple, there are several key features to look for when shopping for running socks. Breathable fabrics will keep your feet from overheating when it’s warm; materials like merino wool can trap heat to keep them from freezing when it’s cold; and compression can help alleviate running aches and pains, like shin splits and tight leg muscles. There are a multitude of lengths to choose, too, from knee-high to no-show.

To help guide you, we’ve rounded up top pairs from Bandit Running, Feetures, and more. It’s time to finally give this running essential the attention it deserves.

How Pendleton Whisky Is Dedicated to Helping Veterans

This article was produced in partnership with Pendleton Whisky

Inspired by the famed Pendleton Round-Up Rodeo, Pendleton® Whisky is more than a brand—it’s a celebration of the American West and all those who embrace its values, traditions, and culture.

It all starts with what goes into each bottle: a well-crafted whisky that delivers rich flavor and a smooth finish. First released in 2003, the Original blend is barrel-aged in American oak and finished with glacier-fed spring water from Oregon’s Mt. Hood. The Pendleton Whisky collection also includes a Midnight variety, a 90-proof whisky aged in American brandy barrels, as well as a 1910 variety, a 100 percent rye whisky that’s oak barrel aged for a minimum of 12 years.

The Pendleton Whisky collection pays homage to the spirit of the American cowboy and true western tradition. However, to truly appreciate the brand behind the bottle, you need to be acquainted with Pendleton’s annual limited edition ‘We’ve Got Your 6’ Military Edition bottle.

The idea for the Military Edition bottle stems from Pendleton Whisky’s core principles—based on the “Code of the West” from the book Cowboy Ethics by James P. Owen—which include ‘having each other’s back’, ‘staying true to your word’, and ‘always doing what’s right’. When the first dedicated Military Edition bottle was released in 2015, the goal was simply to support veterans in local communities who had sacrificed so much to defend the freedoms we all hold dear.

In 2021, the Pendleton Whisky team decided to double down on their support of military families by partnering with the Bob Woodruff Foundation. Founded in 2006 after reporter Bob Woodruff was hit by a roadside bomb while covering the war in Iraq, the foundation is one of the largest non-profit organizations in the country. In fact, it’s granted over $87 million to local veterans’ organizations around the country, supporting emerging and long-term needs like suicide prevention, caregiver support, and food security.

A Worthy Cause

This year, Pendleton Whisky renewed its partnership with the Bob Woodruff Foundation. Pendleton Whisky is donating a portion of sales to the foundation, totaling $100,000. This money will go directly toward supporting local veterans’ organizations.

“The VA and other government services do a lot of great work for veterans, but the reality is they can’t do it all,” says Dave Woodruff, Bob Woodruff Foundation’s co-founder and chief development officer. “We come in and try to fill those gaps by getting dollars to people who are doing the work in local communities.”

That includes people like Brandon Davis, an eight-year U.S. Army veteran, who now serves as a senior care coordinator at Veterans Services of the Carolinas (VSC). Davis runs the largest veterans’ call center in North Carolina, connecting local veterans with assistance including housing, employment, food, and more.

More than a job, this work is personal to Davis. Following his first tour of duty in 2008, Davis struggled to reintegrate into society and fell into homelessness before eventually re-enlisting in the Army for another tour. That experience drove Davis to work tirelessly in service of fellow veterans, many of whom are facing the same situation he found himself in.

“Companies donating money to the Bob Woodruff Foundation are enabling those of us on the front lines to go out and fill those gaps where the needs are,” says Davis. “Hopefully this makes our communities healthier as a whole.”

Last year, Veteran Services of the Carolinas received a grant from the Bob Woodruff Foundation to support local veterans and their families who are dealing with food insecurity—one of the major challenges brought on by the pandemic. The impact from the Bob Woodruff Foundation partnership was immediate.

Serve One Forward

New for 2022, Pendleton launched an innovative new program that enables everyone to support veterans. The “Serve One Forward” campaign allows consumers to show support for veterans by purchasing a drink for an active duty or retired service member at select bars across the country, from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Purchased drinks will be displayed via tear sheets and veterans can claim those drinks at select bars.

“It’s beautiful because it gets right to the local community and is a great way for people to say thank you to veterans,” said Woodruff.

It all goes back to the concept of “We’ve Got Your 6”: four simple words that represent much more than a motto. It represents a promise to support veterans in need—to protect those who protected us.

For Pendleton Whisky, supporting veterans and having their backs isn’t just something they say, it’s something they do.

Now that’s a cause worth toasting to.

The Most Exciting College Football Conferences, Ranked

College football is America’s most intensely regional sport. And allegiances don’t end with teams; they extend to entire college football conferences as well. No other sport makes a team’s division or conference such a central part of its identity. If you walked into a Pittsburgh Steelers game, you would never in a million years hear fans chanting for the AFC North. But you will occasionally hear fans of SEC football teams chanting “SEC! SEC! SEC!” because college sports are a beast all their own.

The 2022 season is not so much inching closer as it is rapidly closing in. We’re T-minus a month and a half until Nebraska and Northwestern meet in Dublin, Ireland, to start the Football Bowl Subdivision season on Aug. 27. Before they do that—and right as season previewing kicks into full gear—we’re ranking the 10 FBS conferences by how exciting they’ll be to watch in 2022 (an admittedly arbitrary determination). Every conference will have a boatload of storylines worth following, but here’s a primer on the most intriguing college football conferences to pay attention to this fall.

2022 British Open: Most Interesting Players to Watch at St. Andrews

The 2022 British Open, which takes place this week for the 150th time, makes anybody’s list of the two or three best golf tournaments in the world. The Old Course at St. Andrews, in Scotland, is the most historic course in the world—the home of golf, they call it. Put the Open at St Andrews, and you have a mix of competition and venue that has just one contemporary: the Masters at Augusta.

So, this ought to be a good week. The last major on the men’s golf calendar (the British Open, in the common American parlance) takes place at the oldest course in the world. Tiger Woods is in the field, taking a third crack at a major in a year in which he’s otherwise eschewed competitive golf. The wind will be howling for at least some of the 2022 British Open, as it just about always is at this course. St Andrew is a brutal test not just because of the elements, but because of the winding water hazards that snake through the grounds, the sometimes cartoonish bunkers that require nearly impossible shots to get out of, and the course’s general knack for surprise.

Golf doesn’t get much more fun. A time zone discrepancy means you can watch it in the wee hours of morning on the East Coast on Thursday and Friday, though you’ll have to succumb to the Peacock gods to see all the early action.

The field at the 2022 British Open has 156 players, and a few dozen are at least plausible victors, but let’s talk about six we think will be more interesting to follow than most, whether they contend or not. Their odds to win are included to give you a sense of their chances on the Old Course. This list will skip Rory McIlroy, because we refuse to get ourselves worked up in the belief that he will finally win another major. And it’ll skip Scottie Scheffler, Justin, Thomas, and Jon Rahm, because, you get it: They’re good.

2022 British Open: Most Interesting Players to Watch

Xander Schauffele (+1400 to win)

So much of major championship contention comes down to whether a player is in the right form at the right time. Scottie Scheffler had an absolutely torrid winter and spring, and carried the shape of his game to the Masters, where he dominated and won his green jacket. In more toned-down versions of the same dynamic, Justin Thomas tied for fifth at a middling PGA Tour event the week before he won the PGA Championship, and Matthew Fitzpatrick had been piling up near-misses before getting over the top to win the U.S. Open. It’s hard to win majors, but it’s almost impossible to flip a switch out of nowhere and win them. The corollary is that it gets a bit easier if a player is in brilliant form—and the hottest golfer in the world right now is Schauffele. He won at the Travelers Championship two weeks ago, then at the Scottish Open, which had an excellent field on Sunday. In between those back-to-back tour wins, he won the J.P. McManus Pro-Am at Adare Manor in Ireland, a victory that doesn’t count on tour but provides further evidence that Schauffele is scalding right now. He has a preposterous nine top-10 finishes in majors since 2017 without a win. I think that at some point, he’ll get one. Why not this week?

Jordan Spieth (+1600)

There’s a chance we’ve already seen the best of Spieth, and that while he’s mounted a nice climb back toward the top of the sport over the last two years, he just isn’t the same guy who won three legs of the career grand slam by 2017—when he was just 23—and reigned supreme at the Open at Royal Birkdale. But there’s also a chance that Spieth makes it all the way back. He finished second in this event last year, two shots back of winner Collin Morikawa; he’s gotten back to winning on the PGA Tour this year; he just contended at the Scottish Open; and he’s a known lover of windy, gritty links golf courses. It might be OK to believe!

Collin Morikawa (+2000)

Morikawa doesn’t have a win this year. It doesn’t make a ton of analytical sense to just figure he’ll win one on that basis—great players frequently go a year, even multiple years, without any wins—but Morikawa has been hanging around against some great fields. He also has two majors to his name and is, of course, the defending Champion Golfer of the Year at the Open. He hasn’t played since he tied for fifth at the U.S. Open last month, when he moved into contention on Friday, and stayed there until falling into a pit on Sunday. He’s a savvy links player. He’s talented enough to be in the mix, even when he doesn’t have his best stuff. It feels like he should go supernova sometime soon, and this week is as good a time as any.

Will Zalatoris (+2500)

Zalatoris has missed the cut in three of his last six starts. But in the other three, he has two second-place finishes in majors (the PGA and U.S. Open), and a top-five at the Memorial Tournament, one of the more prestigious non-majors on tour. He’s a gamer who gets up for giant tournaments and keeps sniffing around the top of them. Remember, he finished second at the 2021 Masters, too. He’s five-ish good shots or putting strokes away from being a three-time major winner at 25. He missed cut in Scotland this week as the result of treating it like a tuneup for St Andrews. Zalatoris is one of the purest ball strikers this sport has produced in a generation, and that’s a talent that fits on any course.

Tiger Woods (+4000)

Cherish the chance to watch Woods play this tournament. He’s won at St Andrews twice. He’ll be on the other side of 50 the next time the Open is played there. Maybe we’ll see him there again, and maybe we won’t. Nothing is promised, especially not Tiger being in the kind of shape at that point to make a real run at another Claret Jug. Even this year, he shouldn’t be anywhere near contention. On the other hand: He’s Tiger Woods, so it’s best not to assume he couldn’t pull it off. St Andrews is at least a relatively flat walk for his surgically repaired right leg, and he knows his way around the place.

Cameron Young (+8000)

The golf analytics standard-bearer, Data Golf, keeps a stat called “expected wins.” It’s a measurement of how many wins a player can expect to rack up based on round-by-round, strokes-gained data. As in, if a player regularly beats the field average by so many strokes, he would (under normal circumstances) have this many or that many victories. Young is the only player with more than one “expected” PGA Tour win who hasn’t actually won an event in 2022. He’s the No. 31 player in the world, which makes him a substantial longshot at a major but not a complete Hail Mary. His season has included a tie for third at the PGA Championship and a tie for second at the Genesis Invitational, a premier PGA Tour stop that draws a major-like field. This is not advice per se, but if you’re the betting sort and are angling for a longer-shot pick, Young is worth exploring. Also, he wears a Major League Baseball sponsorship patch. Now you’ll know why when you notice that on NBC’s broadcasts.
