Best Old-School Beers From the 80s and 90s

If it feels like every town and ‘burg from Sacramento to St. Petersburg has multiple craft breweries, that’s because they probably do. There are currently over 9,000 breweries operating in the U.S. To put that number into perspective, there were fewer than 400 breweries in the U.S. when the new millennium began. To say there’s been a beer boom in the last two decades is a ridiculous understatement. But there’s something to be said about old-school beers. The nostalgia. The history. The timeless taste.

Thankfully, some classic throwback beers had their genesis before the big boom and are still available today. While many of these old-school beers from the 80s and 90s are household names, many drinkers don’t realize just how long they’ve been around.

We’re talking about beers like Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, a beer that paved the way for brewers crafting pale ales and IPAs in the decades since. But there are many more than just this classic, California-made pale ale. There are wheat beers, amber ales, lagers, pilsners, and IPAs that have stood the test of time.

If you’re like us and you want to pay homage to OG beers that made the craft brewpubs, nano-breweries, and regional breweries of today possible, grab a sixer of one of these great old-school beers.

1. Sierra Nevada Pale Ale (1980)

Some might say Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is the catalyst for the American craft beer boom. Even though it was first brewed in 1980, it paved the way for American pale ales and IPAs. Filled with Cascade hops, it’s known for being bright, piney, and floral, with a pleasing bitter bite. There’s a reason it’s stood the test of time and remains one of the most popular beers today.

How to Build Your Own Wilderness Survival Kit

Planning a big trip into the wilderness? It’s essential to bring a survival kit along with you—it might just keep you alive if things go south. While you can purchase a pre-organized survival kit, the ones you buy in the store often don’t cut it when shit really hits the fan. A better idea: Create your own.

This post will cover what items you’ll need to assemble a tactical survival kit that’ll give you a fighting chance if you’re faced with real danger. In addition to the survival kit list, this piece will also cover how to store and carry the kit, so it’ll be ready when you need it.

Storing a Survival Kit

In addition to what you bring in your kit, how you store it is highly important.

On paddling trips where you could lose your boat and your gear in rapids, your survival kit should be waterproofed, carried in a small pack (such as a fanny pack), and strapped to your body while on the water. At night, however, it’s best to leave your kit in the boat in case you need to make a quick getaway from camp (if a problem bear comes along, for example).

On the other hand, if you’re trekking or hunting upland, consider spreading the items of your kit out: Place items in different pockets and in your pack, so you’re not keeping all your eggs in one basket. If you lose your pack, for example, you won’t lose your entire survival kit along with it.

Tailor Your Kit to Your Environment

Potential survival challenges can change from season to season and place to place. Creating your own kit gives you the chance to tailor it more specifically to your particular adventure before heading out.

For example, are you heading to a place where you might be able to catch fish as a food source? If not, you’ll probably want to leave fishing-related stuff behind. If there are fish, what species are most common? You may need to pack smaller hooks to catch them. The picks below will give you a general idea of what you need, but it’s always smart to consider how they’ll work in your environment, and adjust them as necessary.

Regardless of where you’re traveling, the items outlined below will give you the best chance at staying alive in many remote survival scenarios. They’ve served me well on many backcountry adventures, including a stint on the History Channel show Alone. If you’re in the wilderness with just the clothes on your back and what you can fit into a small pack, these are the survival kit essentials you’ll want to have with you.

Urban Hawker: A Taste of Singapore Is Coming to New York This Summer

When it opens later this summer, walking into Urban Hawker will likely be an overwhelming sensory experience. Steam rising from a pot of laksa as the lid is lifted. Vegetables sizzling as they skate across an oily frying pan. Brightly lit food stalls all around, and behind each one a cook preparing a dish perfected over the course of several generations.

Urban Hawker will bear all the hallmarks of one of Singapore’s famed hawker centers—the ubiquitous open-air food courts found throughout the city—apart from one crucial detail: It’s not in Singapore. Instead, Urban Hawker occupies the space inside 135 West 50th Street in Manhattan, just a few blocks from Times Square and over 9,500 miles from the Southeast Asian city-state.

Slated to open in mid-July, the food hall is the latest project from Singaporean entrepreneur, photojournalist, food guru, and past Anthony Bourdain collaborator KF Seetoh. Once the doors open and cooks start serving customers, it’ll be the closest you can get to a genuine hawker center without booking a trip to Singapore.

“Authentic is my only sales pitch,” Seetoh tells Men’s Journal.

10 Tennessee Whiskeys to Drink Right Now

The 10 Best Tennessee Whiskeys to Drink Right Now

Read article

Seetoh, who started the Singapore-based food company Makansutra, knows a lucrative business opportunity when he sees one. That’s partly why he’s collaborating with Urbanspace (a group that operates multiple food halls in New York) to launch his new venture in Manhattan—a place he calls “the capital of the world.” But his mission is bigger than just selling food to hungry New Yorkers.

“It’s about preservation,” he says.

Hawker centers can be found all over Singapore. They’re the country’s most iconic culinary tradition, and they date back to the earliest chapters of its history, when the population expanded with an influx of migrants from Malaysia, Indonesia, India, China, and farther afield. To make ends meet, many of these newcomers began cooking and selling the cuisines of their home countries.

“The mall food court that the West is familiar with is just about bringing fast food joints into a little counter,” Seetoh explained. “Hawker centers sell heritage street food—very different from the stuff people burn in barbecues or deep fry on the streets.”

The Singaporean tradition of hawker centers is so important that it was added to the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Unfortunately, like so many great cultural traditions around the world, it is in jeopardy. The first problem, according to Seetoh, is the cost of doing business in Singapore, from “ridiculous” rent rates to expensive supplies.

“Folks expect hawker food to be cheap,” he explains. “But [hawkers] pay the same for a fresh chicken in a chicken rice stall as what Gordon Ramsey would pay for his chicken at the Marina Bay Sands. It’s a wonder that people can still survive.”

Pricey ingredients are one issue, but Seetoh claims “the ultimate cancer” for hawker centers is a shortage of labor.

“Singaporeans are naturally not big on service culture because of who we are, who we’re brought up to be,” he said. “It’s the richest city in the world. Many countries that have this level of success have that same problem, but other countries will allow [businesses] to hire workers from another country that want this job. But not Singapore. They frown on it.”

ambsn

The Coolest Pieces of Gear We Tested This Week

Read article

Seetoh believes the best way to save Singapore’s hawker culture is a transplant: moving a team of Singaporean hawkers around the world to set up shop in a new market where labor is plentiful and customers are willing to pay fair prices.

Stripping the suffering Singaporean hawker scene of some of its top talent may seem counterproductive to saving it, but Seetoh insists the hawkers moving to New York are “actually going on a Noah’s Ark.”

“We are not killing them. We are saving them,” he said. “If they stay in Singapore [their businesses] will die.”

Recruiting a team of hawkers to relocate to New York City has been a challenge for Seetoh and his team, but he has finally found “a good selection of young and slightly older” cooks—17 of them, to be exact—who are ready to fire up their stoves when Urban Hawker opens its doors.

“Most of them are young,” he said. “The older ones that are going are there to hand over their skills and share them with our American staff so they can take over the mantle.”

What to Eat at Urban Hawker

The hawkers will be cooking an array of “Malay, Chinese, Indian, Peranakan, and even some western Hainanese” dishes, according to Seetoh. In other words, “a cross-section of the cultures in Singapore.”

Highlights include halal burgers, oyster omelets, a selection of soups and skewers, and Malay nasi lemak, a delicious dish made of rice cooked in coconut milk and served with toppings like a hard-boiled egg, crispy fried anchovies, and cucumbers. Customers will also be able to try chicken rice, an aptly-named Singaporean classic made with poached chicken and seasoned rice (it’s one of Seetoh’s favorites).

Cut poached chicken with skin next to a pile of rice with green garnish and bowls of dipping sauces in the background. Urban Hawker

Seetoh believes the hawkers’ flavors will be a hit in Manhattan. Yet it’s also important to him that the story behind each dish gets shared.

“Singaporeans do not spin enough about our food culture,” he says. “It’s time to tell the world.”

It remains to be seen how Seetoh’s hawkers will take to New York City, or how New Yorkers will receive this new entry into the city’s crowded restaurant scene. But the Singaporean food guru is optimistic that the project will work out for one simple reason.

“People around the world love good food,” he said. “It’s not about Asian or Singaporean or European or South American. It’s just great food. You’re eating somebody else’s culture.”

U.S. Open Deems Dewar’s Lemon Wedge Its Signature Cocktail

The U.S. Open has its first-ever signature cocktail, the Dewar’s Lemon Wedge. That’s right, it only took 122 years for the third of the four major championships in golf to offer a boozy beverage synonymous with the tournament—right on par with Derby Day’s mint julep.

Named the Lemon Wedge—a double entendre for both the garnish and style of golf clubs used out on the green—the cocktail consists of Dewar’s 12-year old whisky, lemonade, and club soda for “a modern twist on the classic highball,” Gabe Cardarella, Dewar’s brand ambassador, tells Men’s Journal.

Dewar's Creates Limited-Edition Whiskey for U.S. Open

“This recipe was created in partnership with the creative minds at the USGA, who, like us, recognize that if you’re using quality ingredients, you only need a few of them to make something complex and memorable—suited to be the perfect drink to take in the greatest game on Earth,” Cardarella emphasized.

Courtesy Image

The 122nd Championship is taking place June 16-19 at The Country Club in Brookline, MA. For the second year, Dewar’s Whisky is the official blended scotch whisky of the U.S. Open Championship, releasing a consecutive limited-edition of Dewar’s 19, “The Champions Edition” alongside the Lemon Wedge.

“Inspired by the rich legacy and ethos of the U.S. Open—”From Many, One”—this celebratory bottle highlights that from many casks, one champion blend emerges,” says Cardarella, adding that The Champions Edition comprises 40 different single malt and grain whiskies that are double-aged, then extra-matured in ex-bourbon and first-fill rye casks by Dewar’s Master Blender Stephanie Macleod. “The balanced and vibrant whisky is as complex as the legendary game of golf, featuring floral notes, honey, butterscotch, and spice in the form of toasted oak and cinnamon, with a rich and long finish.”

Drawing parallels between the sport and spirit, Cardarella likens Dewar’s humble beginnings in 1846 to the site of this year’s U.S. Open—where a modest caddie, Francis Ouimet, won the 1913 title. It was the first time the Championship was held in Brookline, igniting a golf boom in America. Nine years later, the tournament became so popular that the USGA introduced ticket sales for the public to watch the U.S. Open and, in 1924, introduced qualifiers. The Brookline Country Club has since hosted the Championship in 1963 and 1988, and now sets the scene for 2022—where both the U.S. Open as well as Dewar’s attract a global audience.

For fans who can’t make it to the Country Club, Dewar’s created a cocktail kit available via Cocktail Courier, complete with a golf pick as a playful complement to your lemon garnish. The Champions Edition bottle is available in stores and online nationwide.

“Golf and whisky go together like, well, your hand and a golf glove,” jokes Cardarella, unveiling the official Dewar’s Lemon Wedge Cocktail recipe (below). “They’re about bringing people together, upholding tradition, and creating a few of your own along the way.”

The Best Standup Paddleboards of 2022

The sun’s out, the weather’s warming up, shorts are back—and that means the season for standup paddleboards has finally arrived. The water is calling.

In the last decade, SUPs have seen a meteoric explosion in popularity. Some people SUP just to practice their balance and get out in nature. Others do yoga on their SUP boards for an extra stretching challenge. And still others use them for river trips, reef snorkeling adventures, or even for fishing expeditions.

The possibilities are endless, and the boards are plentiful. Here’s how to find the right one for you.

Standup Paddleboard Shapes and Sizes

Like kayaks and surf boards, standup paddleboards come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and materials. Some boards are designed to rip down raging rapids, while others are made for more casual exploring.

All-purpose boards are usually long and wide, and they’re ideal for anyone new to the sport. Their generous dimensions offer stability and make it easier to stay balanced while paddling.

Whitewater boards are shorter, fatter, and great for ripping up whitewater parks and river rapids. They handle nimbly and make it easy to jib, surf, and weave—but they’re challenging to control as a beginner.

Touring and racing boards are typically long and skinny. They move quickly across lakes, reservoirs, and open water, but they can be challenging to control for the inexperienced.

Most boards you’ll see these days are inflatable. That design certainly has its advantages, but solid SUP boards have a lot of benefits, too. The market is full of rigid SUP boards made from a variety of materials that offer versatility for different user preferences and budgets.

Solid SUP Materials

Wooden boards are made with a hollow core construction, offering maximum strength and flotation without the need for synthetic foams. When the wood is sourced sustainably, they’re also more eco-friendly, and the natural grain gives these boards a classy look. Paulownia wood is universally recognized as the best “skin” for a solid board. Paulownia boards are lightweight, very durable, and cut across the water smoothly. But some makers use bamboo, pine, and other woods as well.

Most solid boards are made with either fiberglass or carbon fiber skins with foam cores. Not unlike surfboards, these are often lighter than wood, and generally more cost effective (so you feel a little less pain if they get nicked or gouged).

Length and Width

Generally, boards are between 30 to 35 inches wide, and anywhere from nine to 12 feet long (or even 15 feet long for multi-person boards). Longer boards are more stable than shorter boards; shorter boards are more agile. Longer, skinnier boards are faster in the water.

Ready to find your board? Read on to learn about the best standup paddleboards of 2022.

Giving Your Dog CBD Oil: The Fundamentals

There are two vital steps you should take before shopping for a CBD dog product:

  1. Understand what CBD is and how it works for a dog’s body
  2. Consult with your veterinarian

The best way to understand how CBD works for our dogs is to understand how it works for us, because the fundamentals are the same.

What Is CBD and How Does It Work for Dogs?

CBD is short for cannabidiol, which is one of over a hundred molecular compounds known as cannabinoids that naturally occur in the cannabis, or hemp, plant.

Cannabinoids, like CBD, interact with a system in the bodies of nearly all animals (including dogs, cats, goldfish, birds, snakes, and us) called the endocannabinoid system. The endocannabinoid system exists because our bodies produce a number of compounds called (surprise) endocannabinoids. These are vital to biological functions like pain response, memory, mood, immune response, and more.

The endocannabinoid system is a cell-signaling system closely integrated with the central and peripheral nervous systems, as well as systems and organs that regulate those systems endocannabinoids serve — sleep, mood, immune response, digestion, and more. When a cannabinoid from hemp interacts with a receptor in the endocannabinoid system, it passes along its effects.

The hemp plant is loaded with beneficial cannabinoids like CBD, CBC, CBG, and CBN. Each of these imparts its own unique properties while also working together to achieve a synergistic effect known as the Entourage Effect.

In short, the Entourage Effect happens when multiple cannabinoids are present, modifying one another’s behavior while simultaneously contributing to a more robust overall effect.

Because of CBD’s wellness effects, CBD products for humans, as well as CBD for dogs, have become incredibly popular, with products as diverse as treats and other CBD for dogs, CBD gummies, CBD capsules, CBD vape products, CBD pain cream, CBD oil tinctures, and (for humans only!) THC oil products, such as THC gummies.

Is CBD Safe for My Dog?

Yes. In 2017, the World Health Organization2 declared that CBD is safe for animals. So, it’s perfectly safe to give CBD products to your adult dog (but not your puppy!)

Will CBD Get My Dog High?

No, CBD oil will not get your dog high. THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, is the psychoactive compound present in cannabis that causes a high. High amounts of THC can be found in the form of cannabis known commonly as marijuana. While CBD exists in marijuana, the CBD oil used in the various products we’re talking about comes from the low-THC form of cannabis called hemp. CBD will not get you or your dog high.

It’s also important to know that THC in large doses can be toxic to pets3, so you want to avoid products that have any more THC than what is found in full-spectrum CBD, which is less than 0.3%. We’ll talk about THC and CBD spectrum types in further detail below.

So How Can CBD Benefit My Dog?

The two most common reasons people look to CBD hemp oil as a natural supplement for their dog’s wellness are anxiety and pain.

Stress and anxiety can take a heavy toll on dogs … and their owners. From settling into a new forever home after the shelter, to separation anxiety, fireworks, and thunderstorms, there’s a multitude of stressors that can make it hard for your dog to cope, and that often come with destructive behavior issues. CBD is an incredibly popular go-to for people with anxious dogs. The American Kennel Club4 notes that “the calming effect of CBD can also cause slight drowsiness,” and that will certainly be true in products that also contain soothing supplements like chamomile and passion flower.

Pain and discomfort are a common issue as dogs age, and some breeds are prone to joint issues5 that can cause serious, chronic discomfort that only gets worse over time. While all research into the application of CBD for chronic pain is still ongoing, the American Kennel Club has cited a Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine study6 that found “dogs given CBD at a rate of 4.4 mg per pound twice daily for a month showed significant improvement in pain relief and quality of life.”

What to Look for in CBD Products for Dogs

Here are a few important tips to keep in mind when shopping for CBD products for your dog, or even for yourself.

Pure Cannabis Means Pure CBD

Hemp really is something of a wonder plant. Hemp is useful for myriad applications such as fabric fiber, construction material, holistic medicine, and more. One of the hemp plant’s more fascinating properties is its ability to clean the soil in which it grows.

This soil-cleaning power as a phytoremediator is great for the environment, with hemp siphoning toxic chemicals, pesticides, and heavy metals from the earth.

However, all those chemicals end up in the hemp plant itself. So, you should always purchase CBD oil for dogs, humans, cats — anybody — that is made with organically grown, pesticide-free, non-GMO hemp.

Understand CBD Spectrums

CBD products are available across a spectrum dictated by what cannabinoids are present in the final oil product. Products using full spectrum oil contain all the cannabinoids present in cannabis hemp, including the legally allowed 0.3% THC.

If you want to avoid THC completely (wise choice with our pet pals), but still provide your dog with the benefits of the synergistic Entourage Effect, broad spectrum is your CBD oil of choice. The THC is filtered out of broad spectrum CBD, though the oil that remains is still robust and potent.

Third-Party Confirmation

Whether you’re shopping for CBD oil for dogs or yourself, always look for products accompanied by a lab report supplied by an independent, third-party lab.

These lab results will tell you exactly what compounds are present in your hemp product, and in what amounts. This is the best way to ensure your pup’s CBD oil is free of pesticides and does not contain toxic amounts of THC.

How Much CBD Should Dogs Take?

Figuring out how much CBD to give your dog can feel immensely overwhelming. After all, as well as you and your dog may communicate, your pet can’t speak to tell you what feels good and what doesn’t.

Also, the right dosage amount for your pet is dictated by the size and metabolism of your dog, as well as the concentration of CBD in the product you choose.

There’s a wide range of CBD oil dosage amounts for dogs recommended on the internet, and this adds to the confusion.

How do you know what’s best?

  1. Consult with your veterinarian
  2. Follow the instructions on your product
  3. Start with a small dose

By far, the easiest way to ensure you’re giving your dog CBD in the correct dose is to choose a product specifically formulated for your dog’s size. Start small in your dosage, and always observe your dog after you’ve given them CBD and keep an eye out for potential side effects, like nausea, or any signs that your pet might not be enjoying the experience.

CBD for Dogs: The Final Word

Yes, CBD is safe for your beloved pet and no, it won’t get your dog high. Instead, CBD oil could provide a therapeutic, soothing, distinctly chill experience to make your dog’s life a little more enjoyable and comfortable.

As long as you consult with your vet and follow your dog’s lead by observing how your pet reacts to the CBD, you’re in for a good experience. Using the product list and shopping tips we provided today, you can get CBD oil for your dog with confidence and ease.

How to Grill Tomahawk Steak and Lobster Tails

Grilling isn’t baking, so we like to leave some creative discretion up to you in terms of favorite spice blends and rubs.

Ingredients:

For the tomahawk steak you can ask your butcher for a nicely trimmed cut, some supermarkets will have a tomahawk cut at the ready. If you need more guidance on how to cook a tomahawk, here’s a surefire recipe from Napoleon Grills.

  • 1 tomahawk steak (approx. 2.5 lbs)

For the lobster tails, you should check with your local fish monger or seafood counter at your store  to get the freshest tail, however quality frozen tails are normally available. If you need a bit more guidance on handling and grilling the lobster tails, you can refer to this recipe from Napoleon’s ‘Sultana of Sizzle.’

  • 4 fresh lobster tails
  • ½ cup butter
  • 1 clove garlic, grated
  • 1 lemon
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 tsp parsley, chopped

Steps:

To start this date night dinner, you’ll want to fire up the sizzle zone on the Prestige Pro 665 and set one side of the grill to medium heat.

Toss some quartered potatoes (either white or Russet will suffice) and mushrooms with olive oil, salt, paprika and garlic powder. Wrap the potatoes and mushrooms with a whole peeled garlic tightly in foil and place on one side of the heated grill over medium heat.

Next get started on grilling up some asparagus stalks on the patented S-WAVE grid on the left side of the grill.

With the sizzle zone nice and hot, season your Tomahawk chop with salt and pepper on both sides. Sear the steak on the sizzle zone for 2-4 minutes on each side to get a nice char on the meat.

Next you’ll add your lobster tails seasoned in some garlic and parsley on the back burner over indirect heat.

Once the Tomahawk has been seared on both sides, add it to the grill to continue cooking over indirect heat. Let the full meal cook on the grill for 15-20 minutes, turning the steak every 5 minutes to evenly cook on both sides.

Remove the steak from heat and wrap in foil to cool for 10-15 minutes. The steak should cook to medium rare but feel free to check the temperature with a thermometer.

Remove the asparagus, potatoes and lobster tails and set aside.

Plate your lobster tails and carved steak alongside asparagus and potatoes in your desired presentation on a plate (remember this is a date night, so use your nicest plates and utensils.) Serve alongside some impressed nods and a smile from your date and enjoy!

If you’re looking to elevate your grilling game this summer, look no further than the The Napoleon Prestige Pro 665. With a shining stainless steel body that provides durability against the elements (and chrome details that add a splash of luxury), the Napoleon Prestige Pro 665 is not just durable on the outside; under the lid is the same quality stainless steel used for the cooking grids, tube burners and dual-level sear plates. As a bonus, the LED Spectrum NIGHT LIGHT™ Control Knobs have near limitless color options, making night-time entertaining a breeze, Learn more about the Prestige Pro 665 and find a local retailer at napoleon.com.

Inside the Louis Vuitton and Nike 'Air Force 1' Exhibition by Virgil Abloh

The late Virgil Abloh brought hip-hop to high fashion, inspiring a new generation of dreamers. That legacy is realized in the Louis Vuitton and Nike “Air Force 1” Exhibition—a sneaker symposium of sorts located in Brooklyn’s Greenpoint Terminal Warehouse.

Free of charge to the public and open from May 21 to 31, the “Dream Now” exhibition is like a love letter to Abloh, melding his passion for music, architecture, engineering, and streetwear. Within the exhibit are 47 styles of bespoke Air Force 1 shoes. Abloh left his mark, combining Louis Vuitton’s classic Monogram and Damier Ebene (checkerboard) patterns. On some, classic Vernis leather is used in punchy color combos, while others have an unexpected neon sole. Abloh’s signature ploy of spelling out words in Helvetica fonts and encapsulating them with quotation marks is seen on laces and midsoles (e.g. “AIR” and “LACET”). And an homage to France, Louis Vuitton’s headquarters, is seen in mini flags and the use of French words like the aforementioned “lacet,” French for lace.

Abloh’s love of the literal is also honored on the facade of the warehouse, which has been painted bright orange to mimic a Nike shoe box. You can’t miss the towering statue of a break dancer either.

The shoes are affixed to the walls, with projectors casting clouds on the ceiling and lights lending a blue-purple hue over the room. Specially placed mirrors lend a whimsical feel to the exhibit, as does a monstrous treehouse in the back—a physical representation of childhood dreams—and the pursuit of them. Within that interactive space, you’ll find a mood board, turntable, and a short film featuring Abloh.

Quotes on the walls are apropos of Abloh’s ethos and design doctrine that anything can become a new design if you simply change the original by three percent. Aphorisms include: “Who did it first? Where did they get the idea? Is it new?” and “Are you a tourist or a purist?”

Some of the 47 shoes in the show will be up for sale next month. You can also find several globes peppered around the city in Brooklyn’s Domino Park, Grand Central Station, and Columbus Circle. If you’re in the area—or close enough for a jaunt to Brooklyn—this is a must-see.

College Football Offseason 2022: NIL Mania, Coaching Beefs, and More

In most sports, player movement defines the offseason. A free agent signs with a new team. A team makes a big trade. A new draft pick shows promise. College football is different. In recent years, the offseason has been less about players moving around and more about the suits that run the sport pontificating on how the whole enterprise should operate.

They have never done more arguing than they’re doing right now. There is a wrinkle, though: Once you get past the bureaucracy, this sport’s offseason is starting to look a bit more like those in other major U.S. leagues.

Let me explain. From new recruiting rules to NIL deals and more, here’s what to track between now and the next college football season’s kickoff at the start of September.

How to take a punch

College Football Offseason 2022: The Top Stories That’ll Shape Next Season

1. The sport is in a moral panic over player compensation.

If you follow college football even a little bit, you have undoubtedly noticed a lot of hand-wringing over two recent rule changes.

In April 2021, the NCAA reversed decades of policy by allowing athletes to transfer schools without sitting out a season, as had been custom from the beginning of college sports. The association made the move under heavy pressure. It had drawn a lot of criticism over the years for subjecting unpaid athletes to tighter movement restrictions than well-paid coaches and administrators, who had no such requirement to sit out after a move.

Three months after that change came an even bigger one. After more than a dozen states had passed laws forcing it to do so, the NCAA dropped another ban that had lasted for all of college sports history: a prohibition on athletes receiving money from third parties for the use of their name, image, or likeness.

Since then, “NIL” has become shorthand for a new era. At many schools, boosters set up “collective” organizations that have sought to pay players (under the guise of advertising and charity deals) to attend their schools. The NCAA has tried to make clear the practice is not allowed, but it ultimately hasn’t been able to do much about it; the organization is worried that aggressive action to rein in player deals will lead to antitrust lawsuits that it could lose.

The early-May transfer announcement of Pitt receiver Jordan Addison, who won the Biletnikoff Award as the country’s top pass-catcher last year, seemed like an unofficial starting gun for a fresh round of worry. The confluence of free transfers and a lightly regulated third-party payment system for players still falls way short of the true free agency that exists in pro sports. Even so, it represents a big departure from the previous college football status quo.

Addison picked USC last Friday. That same day, Jimbo Fisher and Nick Saban got into the highest-profile coaching beef the sport has ever seen, and it was sparked in part by NIL deals and collective recruiting.

Nobody knows how this will all settle. The NCAA wants Congress to pass a national NIL law that would supersede the patchwork of state laws currently in effect, but Congress has yet to play ball, and it’s a midterm election year. For the time being, expect more and more transfers. Your school’s college football roster today will likely not be the same on Labor Day.

2. The NCAA is lifting initial counter limits.

One of college football’s foundational rules is that teams can only add 25 new scholarship players per year (with some exceptions and the ability to frontload and backload signing classes). The limit of 25 “initial counters” is important because it reduces the incentive for coaches to “over-sign”—to bring in too many players—and then run them out of their programs when they’ve decided they’re not good enough.

But that rule is on its way out, as the NCAA’s DI Council announced on May 18. It’s a direct response to the rising number of players entering the transfer portal, as teams have risked losing players at a higher rate than they’re able to replace them while still offering scholarships to high school recruits. For now, it’s being presented as a two-year rule waiver, but college football experts think it will become permanent. It sounds like a minute rule change, but it could result in the best recruiting programs (like Alabama, Georgia, and Ohio State) loading up with larger, more elite signing classes in certain years.

3. Conference championship games might look different this year.

In addition, the NCAA also announced on May 18 that it will relax its regulation of conference championship games. That’ll give each conference more freedom to sort out how it selects title game participants. The Pac-12 took advantage immediately and announced that rather than the winners of its two divisions meeting in its championship game, the teams with the two best records, regardless of division, will get the nod.

The NCAA’s change opens the door for other conferences to do the same. There’s a good chance some will; it would help them maximize their chances of their best team getting picked for the College Football Playoff. The Big Ten and ACC, for example, have lopsided division structures with all of the potential Playoff teams on one side, and either conference might decide to do exactly what the Pac-12 has done.

4. Will the FBS go rogue and leave the NCAA?

Finally, Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith seems to want the FBS, the top teams in the college football rankings, to break away from the NCAA altogether. It is not clear what that would accomplish, given that those schools already govern themselves within the NCAA. But a working idea is that, years down the line, a non-NCAA college football division would give schools the flexibility to run the sport more like a business, without the regulatory requirements of other NCAA sports. This story won’t be settled in the 2022 offseason, but keep an eye on it.

5. Oh, and there’s an actual college football season to prepare for, too.

The endless debate over governing NCAA football has taken up almost all of the spotlight lately. Even so, actual football questions are lurking in the background:

Does Texas A&M have a QB? This might not get resolved until the season’s actually started, but it’s one of the most important questions facing any single position group at one program. The Aggies had a nearly title-caliber team in 2021 (and even beat Alabama), but an injury in September to QB Haynes King doomed them. If King stays healthy this year, will that be enough for them to go all the way?

Is the QB carousel done spinning for a bit? Probably. But once fall camp rolls around and certain passers fail to win starting jobs, expect it to fire up again.

Actual football starts in just over three months. Now begins the ultimate offseason workout: Finding things to talk about until conference media days provide more catnip.

Back Pain: Inflammation, Excess Weight, and Underdeveloped Glutes

I KNOW back pain.

L5 S1 Disc Rupture

It started with disc degeneration (FYI most people over 40 have this on some level)

Then there was a full disc rupture (scroll to see.) It was so bad that I had foot drop, and loss of use of my right leg…

There was an urgent surgery (laser endoscopic) and then a second one later.

There was temporary alleviated pain. And then it came back…

“If only you had a strong core” they said… I DID

“If only you understood the body keeps the score- it’s your emotions they said”… I DID

“If only you do PT, stem cell, Chiro, meditate, surgery, massage, spend a fortune on Sarno experts, Acupuncture, I DID THEM ALL

Everything helped… in the moment.. temporarily… but nothing FIXED IT. The disc between L5 S1 was now gone.

And then that one day, my daughter said that to me. I got on a mission to develop my glutes…it started as ego (hey bigger butts are in!) but it taught me so much…

The pain drastically reduced most days. Why? Because when you have underdeveloped glutes your disc take all the weight and pressure! Develop and use your glutes and you take the disc out of the main equation. Lightbulb moment for me!

Developing glutes… The difference in PAIN is NIGHT AND DAY.

I’m not 100% out of pain- I do get flare ups and they are not amazing. But they are not debilitating anymore. We do not talk enough about this…and we should. AND as we age we we lose our butts if we do not focus on them.

If you have back pain and also have tried “everything” my question to you is “how is your butt building going?”At 50 I finally really have them! This pic was taken 2 weeks ago.

What else should you do?

❤ Lose excess fat
❤Eat anti inflammatory

Best Off-Roading Trips in America

From sea to shining sea, we have a big country with endless backcountry opportunities—especially for those who’ve discovered off-road-vehicles. There’s something about the combination of a powerful ride and backcountry exploration that makes off-roading trips so unique.

For those unfamiliar with the joys of off-roading trips, consider the fact that a lot of public lands welcome motorized and electric vehicles. Nearly an eighth of all the land in the U.S. is managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), including about 45,000 miles of paved roads and more than 400,000 miles of dirt roads and trails that are open to vehicles. States also have a tremendous amount of public land (more than 150 million acres) that’s accessible to off-roading. Plus, there are vast private holdings that allow access and conduct tours—such as Ted Turner Reserves (the New Mexico Vermejo ranch boasts some 550,000-plus acres), or the 37,000-acre Paws Up Resort near Greenough, Montana.

Itching to get out of the car and (way) off the beaten path in an adventure rig? The following top outfitters can provide that green light with a variety of sweet rides, ranging from 4x4s, SXS’s, ATVs, UTVs, dirt bikes, and our current favorite, the Polaris Slingshot—a racy, open-air, three-wheeled “autocycle” that seats two. Have a blast out there!

Three UTV's off-roading in Big Bend National Park's Chihuahua Desert country with FarFlung Outdoor Center: Terlingua, TX

1. Far Flung Outdoor Center: Terlingua, TX

The Big Bend region of southwest Texas is beyond spectacular—its vast Chihuahuan Desert landscape replete with geological diversity, ancient outcrops, deep chasms, and wind-sculpted dunes. It’s a great place to hike, but getting deep into the backcountry by foot isn’t for everyone. For sweeping views of the park’s dramatic Chisos mountains (and some wind in your hair on hot, dry days), we recommend an ATV trip with Far Flung Outdoor Center.  The guided trip starts near the artsy ghost town of Terlingua and takes you on a 14-mile round-trip up Christmas Mountain, the second highest peak in the area. You’ll stop for great vistas and expert insight into the region’s geology, fauna and history. You can also sign up for float trips (in season) on the Rio Grande as it winds its way through the dramatic landscape that makes up the Mexico-U.S. border.

How to Make Your First Car Camping Trip a Success

This article was produced in partnership with Dometic

Escaping into the wild on a car camping odyssey is an easy idea to pitch from your couch. Dealing with all the logistics of pulling it off is another story. First, there’s mapping out a great place to go. Then there’s gathering all the gear and grub—or buying cool new stuff (more on that in a moment). Long before you begin packing up your vehicle, organization is key from the get-go.

Newbies to car camping may find the prospect of ditching the comforts of home for a few days of “roughing it” in the forest, mountains, or desert to be daunting enough for second thoughts. Even veteran campers can feel the inertia. Don’t let any of that stop you. These essential car camping tips and gear suggestions will (metaphorically) light the campfire and make your next adventure easier to both plan out beforehand and enjoy when you’re out there.

Finding the Perfect Spot

The most important part of making your first car or truck camping trip a resounding success is finding a great location to set up your site. Plenty of online resources can help you dial in a desirable outdoor adventure, starting with the National Park Service and your local state park services. These sites open a treasure trove of possible camping areas and provide important camping intel—ranging from reservations and regulations to campsite amenities. Reserve America is the hub reservation site that most federal, state, local, and private campgrounds use as their system to manage guests in the parks, and will most likely be your online go-to for locking down a spot.

The onX map app gives you lots of great backcountry info for finding camping spots.

Another great resource for finding a camping spot—covering an even larger expanse of national, state, and public lands, including on the vast Bureau of Land Management (BLM) grid—is an app called onX. Not only does the subscription-based service (which works with Android and Apple devices) provide tons of maps and ideas for where to hike, camp, and enjoy the backcountry, it’s also equipped with extensive maps for off-roading driving, hunting, and snow sports.

Use Hipcamp to find tons of private camping spots around the country.

You’ll want to plan at least a month out when nailing down a great place to car camp. Popular spaces, especially in national and state parks during high season, can be snatched up several months in advance, leaving a dicey supply of first-come, first-served spots for gamblers rolling up without a reservation. Even if your first (second or third) choices aren’t available, some diligent searching online will usually turn up other good options in the area you plan to visit—possibly a primitive campsite a little farther off the beaten path, or a private campground offering cabins or glamping sites. For the latter, Hipcamp is a great resource.

 Getting Organized for the Outdoors

Organization is key when planning and partaking in a successful camping trip from start to finish. Having the right gear is up there too, but getting fully rigged up with cutting-edge equipment can come later—even after a few preliminary car camping trips to fine-tune what stuff you’ll want to bring along next time. For now, start off with a solid set of containers to assemble your gear and keep it organized.

You don’t have to break the budget on these. Big box stores like Walmart and Home Depot offer deals on bin packs like Sterilite 45 Gallon Wheeled Latch and Roughneck 18 Gal. Rugged Stackable Storage Tote Container to keep your gear separated and ready to roll at a moment’s notice. Dividing everything into clearly labeled bins—sleeping, cooking, hiking, backpacks, jackets, boots, rain gear—will make packing for your trip a cinch. It will also alleviate all the stress that goes into the initial push to get outdoors.

Pack up for the outdoors with the Front Runner Wolf Pack boxes.

If you’re looking for beefier, high-end storage options, check out the Front Runner Wolf Pack Quad Set ($236). These durable containers are stackable and roomy, which make them ideal for using as your storage in the vehicle. Just pull the gear you want for your trip from the bigger bins, then pack these for use in the wild where their high-strength plastic is built to withstand the rigors of backcountry travel.

Choose Dometic's new line of soft storage from their GO collection for car camping.

To stow stuff more easily in your car, go for Dometic’s new line of storage solutions. Brand new to the noted outdoor fridge company, this variety of storage options include soft storage, which comes in two sizes, 20 liter or 10 liter. These handy little cubes are tough as well as being ideal for storing lots of kitchen gear since they are made from water-resistant and rugged thermoplastic-coated polyester, which gives them a semi-rigid structure that can collapse down. Add in the slip-in insulated totes—GO Pac Insulated 20L and 10L—and your storage transforms into a cooler.

Get Gear That Feels Like Home

Car camping is ideal for newbies given that you can haul enough creature comforts to make your downtime in the outdoors almost as comfy as your back patio. Dometic, the leader in off-the-grid refrigeration and cooling systems, has recently released an entire suite of products geared for exactly that purpose. The Dometic GO line is specifically designed for easy stowing in your trunk or SUV cargo area while conserving maximum space—which is also key for car campers.

Relax at your next car camping site with furniture from Dometic's GO outdoor line.

Highlights from their new furniture line include the Compact Camp Table ($200), Compact Camp Chair ($150), and Compact Camp Bench ($100). The table is a sweet setup, featuring a sturdy bamboo top and aluminum legs pushed to the corners for more leg room. Dometic’s camp chairs are available in three subdued colors (Silt, Ash, and Glacier) that blend into the environment. Made with a foldable aluminum frame, 600D fabric, and beechwood arms, they’re a natural fit with the table, which folds in half and has adjustable legs; opt among three heights (think coffee table, kids’ table, and dinner table).

Take along the Dometic GO Camp Blanket on your next outdoor excursion to keep warm on cool nights.

For another seating option, go with the bench, which is big enough to seat two adults—and could also work as a cot for a napping child in a pinch. It’s made with the same lightweight aluminum frame and heavy-duty fabric as the chairs. A perfect companion for either the bench or chairs is the Camp Blanket ($140), a dual-sided throw that blends a soft, padded top with a waterproof bottom—ideal for sitting on dewy grass or around a campfire.

Light up your car camping site with a set of BioLite's Alpen Glow LED lanterns.

Proper lighting is another must-have. Maximize the homeyness by opting for lighting that gives off a warm yellow glow (as opposed to harsh white light). The new BioLite AlpenGlow Multi Pack ($280) will fully illuminate your site with four USB lanterns in two sizes that have multi-color settings. The lighting system offers options for either cool or warm dimmable white hues, along with a candle mode that gives off a soothing flicker. The LED lights are water-resistant and will run for five hours on high and up to 200 hours on low.

The part of home that’s hardest to replicate in the wild is the sleeping situation. Cramped tents and thin pads aren’t exactly a cozy bedroom, but there are options here as well to significantly up the comfort level. First, for more space, tote along the UST House Party 4 Person Tent ($400). The single-wall tent (no need to set up a separate rain fly) has large side vents to channel cool breezes, plenty of storage pockets, a huge door for easy in and out, and almost six feet of height inside.

Next, toss in a super comfy sleeping pad like the HEST Sleep System Wide ($499), and you won’t want to get up too early for that first cup of coffee on a cold morning. This super comfy mattress mixes a stiff, inflatable bottom half with a memory foam topper covered in a stretchy, breathable cover so you’ll be comfy, no matter how hard and cold the ground is.

Planning and organizing your first (or next) car camping trip is a snap if you utilize the right resources and put a little thought into gear selection and storage. With the proliferation of excellent online portals and offline apps, along with lots of new camp gear, setting out on that first car camping trip isn’t just doable—it’s hopefully the beginning of a beautiful new habit.
