The Best Gas and Electric Leaf Blowers of 2022

There’s no getting around it: Yard work can be a pain. Mowing, trimming, edging, clipping, sweeping—the list of backyard chores goes on and on. If you’re looking for a great backyard shortcut, a leaf blower deserves a spot in your shed. Don’t let their bad reputation for being loud and spewing noxious fumes scare you away—leaf blower technology has come a long way in the past few years.

While those original gas-powered leaf blowers are available—and still great for larger properties—there are lots of quieter options to consider. This includes both electric and battery-powered, corded and cordless blowers. Not to mention, you can choose between handheld, backpack-style, and wheeled options. Before you reach for that rake, save time and reclaim your weekend with one of these top-rated leaf blower models from brands like Stihl, Toro, EGO Power+, Worx, and more.

NFL Draft 2022: 5 Players Who Could Be Sleeper Picks This Year

The concept of an NFL Draft sleeper doesn’t exactly fit the class of 2022. After all, the idea of a player flying under the radar implies that there are players flying above the radar and taking up all of the attention. But this is a weird draft, with no quarterbacks likely to go in the first handful of picks and no one player emerging as anything close to a consensus No. 1 prospect. For the first time in quite a while, it’s possible to follow the NFL Draft news cycle closely, turn on ESPN at 8 p.m. (EDT) today, and not know who the first pick will be.

Nonetheless, some players get more attention than others, and some good ones are bound to tumble down the draft order and become valuable picks for the teams that take them. Let’s run through a handful of those players on the verge of the NFL Draft 2022.

NFL Draft 2022: Cincinnati cornerback Ahmad Gardner runs down the field while looking over his shoulder with a blurry crowd in the background.

5 Players Who Could Be Sleeper Picks in the 2022 NFL Draft

1. Derek Stingley, cornerback, LSU

Two years ago, it seemed impossible that anyone other than Stingley would be the first cornerback off the board in this draft. As a true freshman at LSU in 2019, the five-star recruit exceeded the lofty hype and became a lockdown man-to-man corner in the toughest conference in college football, the SEC. The next two years were almost a formality.

Then things got weird. LSU’s 2020 season was a COVID-fueled disaster, and Stingley only played in three games in 2021 due to a mix of injuries and focusing on draft preparation. Meanwhile, another corner in the 2022 class, Cincinnati’s Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner, put together a dominant 2021 and found himself shooting up draft boards in recent weeks.

Gardner is now generally expected to get picked before Stingley, though the LSU product still figures to have a good chance to be a top-10 pick. It’s hard to qualify as a sleeper when most people still see you as a top-10 pick, but all of the quiet around Stingley of late makes him one.

2. Bailey Zappe, quarterback, Western Kentucky

Let’s keep things in perspective: Few people think Zappe will be a long-term starting QB in the NFL, and I don’t either. Until last fall, he was a relatively unknown (though pretty productive) quarterback at Houston Baptist, an FCS school that has a CVS pharmacy on one side of its tiny football “stadium.” He’s only 6’1” and doesn’t add a lot as a runner.

But Zappe had an extraordinary 2021 as a transfer at Western Kentucky, where (working alongside one of his top receivers and the offensive coordinator from Houston Baptist) he set FBS records for touchdown passes (62) and pass yards (5,977). He worked in a quick-strike offense that asked him to chuck the ball 49 times per game. He looked smooth as hell while doing it, too.

He likely won’t be among the first five or even six QBs drafted. But between the third and fifth rounds of the NFL Draft, a team is going to get Zappe and, in my view, gain a capable backup for a long time. There’s a lot of value in that, as some QB-poor NFL teams find out every season.

3. Roger McCreary, cornerback, Auburn

At 5’11”, McCreary is not big and did not have a dominant NFL Scouting Combine performance, and as a result most mock drafts see him going toward the end of the first round, or even in the second. Even so, he was a mega-productive corner against tough competition at Auburn: He broke up 14 passes in 2021 and had five picks the last two years despite opposing quarterbacks having every incentive to throw away from him.

McCreary should be a solid starter in the NFL at a premium position. Any team in the league could use him. But Stingley, Gardner, and up to four other cornerbacks might come off the board before he does. Regardless, some team will land him and be happy they did.

4. Kenneth Walker III, running back, Michigan State

Over the last decade or so, the NFL has devalued running backs. The league pays the position at low rates across the board and, in the NFL Draft, teams usually ignore ball-carriers until the back half of the first round at the earliest. The idea is that line play and the rest of the offense have more to do with rushing success than the halfback, and that passing the ball is a more efficient way to move it downfield in the first place.

All of that is fair. But Walker strikes me as an outlier who’s capable of producing a lot more than he “should” based on the context and the players blocking for him. He’s a classic mix of power, speed, and cutting ability, and I think he’ll be a lot of fun for fans of his future NFL team to watch. Whether he’ll maximize value or be efficient or whatever consultant buzzword you prefer is less clear to me, and his game has some clear limitations. (For one, he’s not much of a pass protector.) But the team that drafts him in the second or third round will get a talented player who’s a joy to watch on the field.

5. Jeremy Ruckert, tight end, Ohio State

I have been a big Ruckert fan since I watched him as a star Ohio State recruit in the summer of 2017. I even thought he was so athletic and skilled that he would force Ohio State, which famously does not involve tight ends much as pass-catchers, to start throwing to the big fellas a little more often.

That never materialized, partly because Ohio State has made a habit of recruiting NFL-caliber wide receivers at an astonishing rate. Proof of that will come in the first round of the NFL Draft, when three former OSU receivers (Garrett Wilson, Chris Olave, and Jameson Williams, who transferred to Alabama) hear their names called. Ruckert also never developed into an electric downfield target, though he did make a few brilliant catches.

But Ruckert might be a really good second- or third-round pick in a class that is light on tight ends. He’s a superb blocker, which makes sense given that was so much of what Ohio State asked him to do. (He only got three targets per game as a receiver.) Ohio State regularly sends running backs and offensive linemen to the NFL, too, and it would track if one of the important components of blocking for those tailbacks also made his mark in a spread-to-run NFL offense.

CBD Oil – Review

I FIRST learned of CBD oil about a decade ago

My first exposure to CBD oil was from my good friend Ari Whitten.  You know “Ari” if you have been following me for a few years because Ari and I go way back… it started at the gym years ago when we became great friends and then we started training together.  Our training sessions turned into therapy for me as I would end up asking him a million questions about every ache or pain I had and he ALWAYS had the solution. I found him BRILLIANT in all things health related!

We ended up co writing a few ebooks together, and over time he earned the title as “my guru” for all things new and cutting edge in health and in the energy space. I would learn something and then go to Ari for validation that it was good haha (he basically has Ghandi like power with me on this stuff!)  It became a running theme anytime I shared something new I learned with my husband Brooks, I would say it is “Ari approved!”

Ari knows me well and knew that I am someone who has dealt with ADHD and anxiety my whole life. He is the first one who taught me about Red light therapy, blue light blocker glasses and much more.

CBD OIL?

Ari recommended I try CBD oil and I hesitated. Why did I hesitate? Because I am a worrier (ummm hello anxiety!) and I knew it was derived from marijuana (illegal in CA at the time) and although I knew CBD did not contain THC (the part of marijuana that makes people high) I was afraid to try it. And again, remember I said “anxiety?” Well, I worry about lots of stuff, especially stuff like this.

Well, after my husband Brooks spoke with Ari, he was open to looking into it further.  After all, if anybody knows my struggles with ADHD and ANXIETY it is him…heck, he is the one living with me!  He went on a hunt to learn more and get a quality product for me.

The FIRST bottle of CBD oil he bought me was $900!

YEP $900!!  Crazy I know. AND it tasted like dirt. Seriously like dirt.  I haven’t really eaten much dirt, or any for that matter, but it is how I would imagine it would taste.  lol

I learned to embrace ‘the dirt’ as it WORKED!!  It tasted like dirt, and was pushing $1000 a bottle…but it WORKED FOR ME!!  So I sucked it up and took my ‘expensive dirt CBD’ on a daily basis.

I mixed it into smoothies, held my nose as I dropped it down my throat, etc… But so gross.  When I DID get past my aversion to the taste and actually take it, it worked like some sort of magic miracle oil.

My mind would calm.  Stress would melt away and I could focus.

However, the taste was SO GROSS and the price point was stratospheric…I had to find a better solution!

Sadly…it took YEARS for me to find a viable solution that WORKED like the original CBD oil, yet was palatable.

The next step came a few years ago when I was talking with my friend Angie Lee and learned that she had her own CBD line.  I tried it, and I really liked it as it was a massive improvement over the $900 “dirt” I had been using.

Now, I am someone who has dealt with ADHD and Anxiety my whole life!

In addition, with my recently ruptured disc three years ago, torn bicep AND Broken food (I know I know, what was with me and injuries!)  which added “chronic pain” to my symptoms.  I really needed my CBD oil! Hello PAIN relief! I need you! Backpain

As you are probably aware, my nutrition is pretty dialed in for the most part.  Yes, I have my moments, but all in all, I keep it pretty clean, and anti-inflammatory.  Besides, as a best selling author of TWO nutrition books, I can’t use “ignorance” as an excuse.

I don’t do dairy or grains, but even with the cleanest of anti-inflammatory diets chronic pain still happens (not as severe as if I ate a traditional American diet BUT it still happens).

Traditional medicine has prescribed me all sorts of “prescriptions” over the years and the list of side effect with those thing are very scary to me (ie produced anxiety). Although I HAVE dabbled with prescription medication at times, I have always searched for natural remedies first…that WORK!

There are many supplements I include daily (like turmeric and fish oil) and will continue to but the WONDER supplement I am obsessed with is CBD oil.

So now,  I am telling you… GO TRY THIS STUFF!  It is legit…the best tasting, best smelling . best WORKING CBD product line that I have encountered!

My absolute FAVORITE are the Soul CBD 25 mg gummies

What can you use CBD oil for?

What can’t you use it for? Haha. Seriously though! You can use it for pretty much anything and everything . It is the miracle supplement. Legit. Miracle supplement. It basically has a better PR firm than KALE and TURMERIC too haha.

CBD oil for Pain Management

CBD oil is know to reduce or even alleviate the symptoms of SO MANY ailments. CBD is different than prescribed pharmaceuticals! Where prescriptions come with a whole long scary list of side effects and sometimes even a risk of addiction, cbd oil typically has NO side effects!

CBD Oil for Anxiety

Over 40 million Americans are diagnosed with “anxiety” This is a serious condition that can cause insomnia, excessive worry, panic attacks, high blood pressure, gastrointenstial problems and more. Prescription pharmaceuticals can alleviate some symptoms BUT with those prescriptions comes a whole host of side effects. CBD is a very mild and effective  way to take the edge off of anxiety without the list of side effects you see with prescription drugs.

CBD for STRESS (physical and emotional)

CBD has a very favorable impact on those suffering from anxiety. This includes PTSD, Social Anxiety, OCD, and even isolated panic attacks. Those that suffer anxiety and use CBD oil regularly have even found their symptoms to disappear completely over time.

CBD Oil for Sleep?

This is your new best friend. For real. Replace your over the counter things that make you drowsy and cranky the next day with this. This will offer you relief with your overall sleep quality.

The legality of CBD oil?

I know that first time users are always concerned about this! I was! Legal CBD oil is made typically from HEMP which is part of the same plant family as Marijuana but that is the only similarity! The major difference? No THC (that is the psychoactive ingredient in Marijuana). CBD is not psychoactive and is legal in most states.

Ready to try it?

The CBD I exclusively use is Soul CBD

Best Gas and Electric Lawn Mowers of 2022

It’s not cheap, but Milwaukee’s mower comes paired with two 18-volt batteries that pack a whopping 12 amp-hours—proof that volts aren’t always the most important number. Why Colin Hanks Loves Being the Bad Guy on 'The Offer'

Colin Hanks is ready to make you an offer you can’t refuse. The actor is part of the ensemble cast of The Offer—a 10-episode miniseries on Paramount+ that details the behind-the-scenes making of the classic film The Godfather. While the film is generally considered to be one of the greatest movies ever made, fans may be surprised to know it almost didn’t happen. Between executives squabbling about production, casting arguments, budget issues and yes, the Mafia itself, The Godfather’s path to legendary status was not an easy one. While it went on to win Best Picture at the 45th Academy Awards and garner legendary status, the actual production of the movie was almost as thrilling as the film itself—at times even more so.

Based on some of the never-before-seen/heard experiences of producer Albert S. Ruddy, the series stars Hanks as Barry Lapidus, a Gulf+Western executive who has some power over Paramount Pictures during the making of the film. Hanks stars alongside an all-star cast that includes Miles Teller (Ruddy), Matthew Goode (Robert Evans), Dan Fogler (Francis Ford Coppola), Giovanni Ribisi (Joe Colombo), and Juno Temple (Bettye McCartt). While nearly everyone in the main cast is portraying a real-life person, Hanks gets to play a composite character who’s based on various executives involved in the making of the movie—giving him the opportunity to make the character his own.

A scene from The Godfather with Marlon Brando and Gianni Russo

The Secret History of 'The Godfather'

Read article

“Barry is the only main character in the show who doesn’t actually exist,” says Hanks. “Everyone else is playing a real person. But this guy doesn’t have any particular look or persona, which is incredibly liberating as an actor because you can kind of create him yourself.”

Hanks told us what makes The Offer such an incredible behind-the-scenes story in its own right—and why, for classic movie fans, The Godfather is the gift that keeps on giving.

Men’s Journal: What excited you the most about getting to explore the making of The Godfather?

Colin Hanks: I think my immediate response was very similar to a lot of people—which was, “Oh, that sounds like something I’d love to see.” But then there’s gotta be an actual reason to really tell this story. It turns out there are many. Making anything creative, especially films, requires a large number of miracles to happen. If you’ve got a good idea, it’s a miracle. If you’re able to write the script, it’s a miracle. If anyone else wants to make it, if it doesn’t rain on Day 38 of shooting, and so on, it’s a miracle. This series really does highlight that and shows that even on a film we all now know as one of the greatest, there were numerous hurdles—and it almost didn’t get made. Everybody looks at it now and just thinks: ‘Oh, well, it’s genius. So that was a given.’ And the truth is it wasn’t. Making The Godfather wasn’t a given at all, and was significantly harder than any of us knew.

Do you remember the first time you watched it?

Vividly. I actually watched The Godfather and The Godfather Part II together, which is a great way to experience it for the first time. It just instantly grabbed me. And then of course it just became one of those epic movies where every couple of years I’ve gotta watch it.

Mj 390_294_five things we learned at the goodfellas reunion

The True Story Behind 'Goodfellas'

Read article

Any favorite moments or performances from the film?

There are so many. I’m always drawn to Robert Duvall’s Tom Hagen. He does something so interesting with that role—and he also has one of my favorite lines. I say it to people quite often: ‘I admire your pictures very much.’ But what I think is truly remarkable, and our series really drives this home, is the dedication of Francis [Ford Coppola] to trust his actors and let them create fully formed individuals and characters. That alone was confounding to so many people on the studio and Gulf and Western [entertainment company] side—and my character, Barry Lapidus, is definitely in that camp. The bravery they showed as artists to make those decisions and stick with them even though they all kind of had their backs to the wall is so admirable. The subtlety of Duvall’s performance is a good example of that. It’s all those creative choices everyone made back then, which makes the film so memorable.

What was it like getting to work with this great ensemble cast?

It was really great. During pre-production, one of the producers, Dexter Fletcher, who also directed the first two episodes, did something really unique. He brought everyone together for a table read. Not only did we all read the script, but he also asked all of the actors to come up with the backstories: where those characters are during the time period of our show. I think that really galvanized the actors and set an important template for all of us. Essentially, there are two different shows being made within The Offer. There’s the moviemaking side, which is me, and Matthew [Goode], Burn [Gorman], Miles [Teller] and Juno [Temple], and there’s the mob component with Giovanni [Ribisi], James Madio, and so on. I didn’t really see those parts since it’s not my character’s angle of the show. So being there together really set a unified tone. That was incredibly exciting.

What are some things you enjoyed most about making the series?

I enjoyed being the bad guy [laughs]. My character is a composite of all the people who didn’t want to make the film. So, for me, it was incredibly fun to enter these scenes where, as soon as Barry Lapidus walks in, everybody’s on edge. I liked being the center of that. I liked being able to poke, prod, and try to get a rise out of the other characters. There’s an early scene where Barry sort of storms Robert Evans’ (Matthew Goode) creative meeting, which sticks out for me. But honestly, the thing I loved was getting to do a ton of scenes with Matthew [Goode] and Burn [Gorman]. The three of us were having fun and getting to know each other, then we’d go and do these scenes where we’re all playing off of each other. It was a tight-knit group, the whole cast at large, which made it really fun. I loved seeing all the subtlety that everyone was bringing to their performances.

How did you prepare for your role as Barry Lapidus?

When we did that big group round table, I really just tried to make it my own. I didn’t really base him on anyone, although every actor will tell you about all sorts of studio people over the years that maybe you could have taken inspiration from. Another unique thing that Dexter did in this regard was put together a top 10 movie list from that era—movies that were inspiring to him for this project that he was going to borrow from. I called it “The Godfather Film Festival.” Many of these movies were auteur-driven, gritty, ’70s films of the era. I remember watching these and thinking, ‘Barry is against all of this.’ Barry is Old Hollywood, and he’s the guy who doesn’t believe in the auteurist vision. To him, the directors and actors just kind of do what they’re told, and that’s that. So it was fun to go against the grain on that sort of stuff—and that helped me get into character.

Did your classic ‘70s-era wardrobe help you get into character, too?

I loved it. I was just coming off Impeachment: American Crime Story, and doing all of these big ‘90s-style costumes, so it was nice to have a little bit more fashion sense. It was a lot of fun with the suits and the cufflinks and, in a way, being the antithesis of that ‘70s Bohemian thing coming out of the ‘60s. Barry is the opposite of that. I really enjoyed being able to work with the costume department and create a look that was not of the world of everybody else in the series. Barry represents New York, not the Hollywood vibe—so if you put me next to Matthew as Robert Evans, we look pretty different.

Did you learn any surprising things about the making of The Godfather that you didn’t know before working on the series?

Definitely. I’d heard stories about the studio not wanting to cast Al Pacino or Marlon Brando and things like that. But I think the thing that surprised me the most was the mob aspect itself and just how much of a component it was in the making of the movie. I had no idea there was any of that going on—and just how much it added to the difficulty of making this movie. I think Francis was quoted as saying something like, ‘Every day I worked on The Godfather was the worst day,’ because it was putting out fire after fire, trying to get this movie made. There are just so many interesting things you find out about the making of the movie from watching the series.

What do you hope viewers take away from this?

Yeah, I mean everyone looks at The Godfather as this masterpiece, which it is. And you can’t imagine it any other way or any other actors in those roles. But at every single turn in making the movie, there was a struggle and a fight for those people to make it that way. So I think for those who love the film, there are all these gems they can sink their teeth into and gain a better appreciation for what it takes to make a movie like this. And even if you don’t like The Godfather, it’s pretty astounding just to see how much they had to go. As the show picks up steam, it’s just one thing after another and interesting to see how it was all put together. It turns out to be one of the most important films ever made.

If you could play a part in the original Godfather, who would you be?

Oh, that’s hard because you can’t imagine anyone else playing those roles. It’s funny, someone asked Matthew [Goode] and me a similar question, and he said he would probably play a waiter at a restaurant and I would probably play one of the staff at the Corleone wedding just to be there. But if I could take a crack at a real role, I’d be Tom Hagen. There’s something so unique and interesting about that character and about the way he exists within the story. It’s all reactions and instincts and trying to understand what’s going on in that guy’s head. And, again, I think he’s got the best line in the movie.

One last thing: What’s this we hear about Hanks Kerchiefs? What was the inspiration?

It’s been a lot of fun. One of my interests outside of acting is graphic design—and I’ve just found there’s something so incredibly unique about kerchiefs and bandanas, whichever name you prefer. They’re incredibly personal items to people. There’s not one person I’ve talked to about this venture who hasn’t said something like, ‘My grandpa always had one of these with him.’ They have value to people, so I enjoy helping to tell that story of why kerchiefs are important and what meaning they have to different people. As far as the business end of it, the inspiration actually came from a documentary I was directing about Tower Records and its founder Russ Solomon. I really tried to take some of his business spirit, put a team together, and learn an entirely new industry here. It’s maddening at times—but it’s also incredibly fun and rewarding.

The miniseries premieres April 28 on Paramount+, with the first three episodes available to stream immediately and the rest debuting on a weekly basis on Thursdays.

Best Adjustable Dumbbells 2022: 11 Top Picks for Your Home Gym

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, the popularity of home gyms has skyrocketed. In fact, many Americans won’t be returning to the traditional gym anytime soon. So how do you bring the gym to you? Whether you’re a dedicated living room lifter or simply want a quick pump between Zoom meetings, adjustable dumbbells are a home gym essential.

Are Adjustable Dumbbells Worth It?

If you’re trying to build up a solid home gym for yourself, then you should absolutely have adjustable dumbbells. What you get is the same basic idea as a dumbbell but without all the space being taken up. You don’t need a whole rack filled with different weights in your home. With these bad boys, you can just turn a dial or flip a switch to up the weight resistance when you need. That’s a hell of a feature.

At the same time, they still deliver the same workout benefits as traditional dumbbells—and those go beyond just building muscle. According to the American Heart Association, the strength and resistance training that dumbbells provide can deliver a surprising range of health benefits. With dumbbells in your home gym, you can do all kinds of workouts that’ll build up the strength of your arms and upper body and help you elevate your overall fitness.

How to Choose an Adjustable Dumbbell

There is a vast range of adjustable dumbbell options on the market today. To choose the right one, you need to consider the weight range you need. Different models will offer different minimum and maximum weights, as well as different weight increments. Beginners should start with lower weights, while expert lifters will likely want a heavier set.

You’ll also want to keep in mind the amount of storage space you have. While most sets are pretty compact, they do vary a bit in size, and since they’re heavy, you’ll probably want to store them on the floor close to where you’ll be working out.

Average Cost For An Adjustable Dumbbell Set

Finally, consider your budget—depending on their features and weight ranges, adjustable dumbbells can cost anywhere from less than $100 to several hundred dollars.

Below, we’ve rounded up top adjustable dumbbell sets from brands like Bowflex, NordicTrack, Flybird, and more.

What I LOVE about the VIP in person get togethers is it is experiential. 17 Best Distilleries in the U.S.

It’s a good time to be a whiskey drinker in America. Whether you’re looking for a traditional bourbon or rye, or seeking something more experimental, there are plenty of options. What’s more, the range and quality of whiskey you can try are constantly expanding. Distillery tours are turning into a way for whiskey makers to educate the public in terms of what they do while showing off some of their history. There are tons of distilleries in the U.S. (almost 2,000 and counting)—and many have exciting tours, elaborate tasting rooms, and other unique experiences. The best part? No matter where you live in the continental U.S., there’s a decent chance there’s at least one of the best distilleries within driving distance (just remember to have a designated driver and drive responsibly).

We love a good road trip. Even if it’s a simple day trip to a notable historical landmark, national park, or even a giant chair or ball of twine. But, if you plan to take an epic road trip this spring, summer, or any time of year for that matter, there are distilleries scattered across the country you shouldn’t miss—from Kentucky to an island in the Atlantic to spaces found high in the mountains.

There are few whiskey distilleries as beloved as Buffalo Trace. If you were to ask rabid bourbon fans about the one whiskey distillery they’d most like to visit, you’ll hear a lot of drinkers shouting “Buffalo Trace” at the top of their lungs. Makers of beloved brands like George T. Stagg, Eagle Rare, and E.H. Taylor, Buffalo Trace has a variety of tours, including an arboretum and botanical gardens tour, a ghost tour, and, oh yeah, one around the technical aspects of producing bourbon.

Best International Castle Hotels to Travel Like Royalty

You’ve slept in hotels, motels, lodges, B&Bs and a yurt or two. Isn’t it high time you checked into an actual medieval castle? (Jousting optional.) Here are the best castle hotels around the world.

Parador De Cardona

Catalonia, Spain

Spain was a major crossroads in the Crusades, leaving a variety of well-preserved castles. But if you prefer yours as solid and foreboding as a sorcerer’s stronghold, aim for Cardona. Above the medieval town at the Pyrenees foothills looms ninth-century Parador de Cardona, an imposingly beautiful mix of Romanesque and Gothic architecture boasting so many vaulted passageways and squared parapets that you can easily picture men-at-arms boiling vats of oil to repel an onslaught. Accommodations are more hospitable, appointed with canopy beds and tile floors. (Pictured above)

Royal treatment: Guests likely dine better than the castle’s original rulers, choosing from chefy Catalonian specialties such as barbecued lamb shoulder and eggplant terrine with pig’s feet. More vino!

Stone castle with green grass below

Amberley Castle

Sussex, England

This site so resembles a movie set, you half expect French knights to taunt you from the parapets. But its long history is thoroughly English, dating back to a King of Wessex granting land to a powerful bishop in 683. A fortified manor house was recorded in the famed 1086 Domesday Book census, then sacked by anti-royalists during the English Civil War. A series of lord-and-duke types supervised upkeep until full restoration as a hotel in 1989.

Royal treatment: Though the hospitality drips English countryside (afternoon tea! scones with clotted cream!), every nook and cranny holds medieval accents such as exposed stone and suits of armor—and there are lots of nooks and crannies.

Castle on sprawling gronds with moat
Some linger here longer than others. Catacombs hold mummified remains of past barons and baronesses, one of whom possibly was entombed alive. Courtesy Image

Schloss Sommersdorf

Saxony-Anhalt, Germany

If you think a proper castle should be surrounded by a moat, make this stop along Germany’s Castle Road. Schloss Sommersdorf’s 14th-century battlements rise from water on all sides, protection which likely helped it survive the plundering and plagues of the Thirty Years’ War (1618–48) that ravaged the local village. Inside ivy-draped stone walls, castle meets cozy B&B, with descendants of the same family that has resided here since 1550 renting only seven rooms to their guests. (Opt for a moat view!)

Royal treatment: If you want to chat up the old fellow tinkering on the castle’s impressive collection of classic cars, mind your manners—that’s likely the proprietor himself, Baron Manfred von Crailsheim.

Dromoland Castle

County Clare, Ireland

For 900 years prior to becoming a posh playground, Dromoland served as the domain of the O’Brien family. Established in 1064, the grounds steadily expanded with Ireland’s history as a backdrop; notably, while many other showplace manors were razed during The Troubles, local IRA leaders spared Dromoland because its lords had a reputation for dealing fairly with tenant farmers. In 1962, it was sold to an Irish-descended American industrialist who rehabbed it into a hotel resort, including the conversion of the lord’s octagonal study into a spiffy cocktail bar.

Royal treatment: The estate’s 450 acres offer “country pursuits” from fishing to archery to clay shooting—or go full noble with a falconry experience.

Neemrana Fort-Palace

Rajastahn, India

The West doesn’t hold a monopoly on awe-inspiring fortresses. Witness this 15th-century jewel box built into a commanding hillside by descendants of a dynastic king following an invasion by Muslim Ghurids. Astoundingly, the lavish, 14-level spread was a crumbling, abandoned fixer-upper by 1947, leading to its rehab as a resort in 1991. Today, the glittering labyrinth (seriously, one can get lost) includes a huge pool, hanging gardens, several eateries and even an amphitheater that hosts music and dance performances. If that’s not enough, tour the nearby village via a camel-pulled cart.

Royal treatment: Looking for a romantic getaway? Choose the Sutra Mahal room, decorated with Kamasutra-inspired erotic paintings consulted by past randy royals.

Best New American Blended Whiskey to Try Now

While blends are the backbone of whiskey nations like Scotland and Ireland, they’ve been less popular among American whiskey drinkers. Much of this has to do with our laws; legally, American blended whiskey can have as little as 20 percent straight whiskey, with the rest of the blend being made up of neutral grain spirit. In fact, American whiskey blends might taste nothing like the flavorful bourbons and ryes that serious whiskey drinkers prefer.

But the blended moniker also applies to any whiskey that combines two or more liquids of different styles or from different sources. This is what many creative producers are currently doing, with no neutral grain spirit in sight. They could be rounding out their own distillate with something complementary from another distillery or working entirely with sourced barrels. But one thing is clear. Modern American blenders are wresting the B-word back from its shady reputation with compelling, flavor-packed recipes.

The best thing about blends: They allow even more diversity than other whiskey styles, limited only by imagination. Check out this variety of blended American whiskey ready for sampling—and get to it!

Minneapolis-based O’Shaughnessy Distilling Co. tapped one of the leading men of Irish whiskey, master distiller Brian Nation, to move to the frigid Midwest and lead its operations. While the distillery’s own whiskey is still aging, Nation has put together this blend of two Irish whiskies—grain and single pot still—with American straight rye. It’s as unique as it sounds. It’s also an excellent way to introduce the company’s goal of blending Ireland and America’s whiskey heritages.
