How To Avoid Paddling Accidents on Busy Waterways
Memorial Day marks the launch of the boating and paddling season across the U.S. This year, however, waterways will look a little out of the ordinary—likely more crowded than ever.
Impacted by the ongoing pandemic, 2020 saw a whopping 35 percent spike in new and used boat purchases by first-time boat buyers as hundreds of thousands of Americans sought fresh air, escape and refuge on the water. Kayak and paddleboard sales also skyrocketed, meaning thousands of new enthusiasts will be unleashed on the nation’s waterways as usage peaks this season, many woefully unprepared to navigate the crowds.
“Everybody needs to be extra vigilant and educated about boating safety, especially with 415,000 new first-time buyers joining the boating fraternity this past year,” said Water Sports Foundation Executive Director Jim Emmons. “It’s more important than ever to exercise extra caution to keep yourself, your friends and family safe while enjoying boating activities.”
While sales have exploded for all types of recreational craft—from paddleboards and kayaks to jet skis, powerboats, sailboats and even yachts—COVID-19 mandates put a grinding halt to boating education classes offered by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Power Squadron and other private boating schools.
As the boating season approaches and classes are back in session in many states, boating safety stakeholders like the Water Sports Foundation are issuing a mayday to push and promote boater and paddler education and safety.
“Fortunately, live classes are reopening in many communities, plus there are a variety of new virtual paddler and boater education classes that anyone can easily access online,” said Emmons, adding that a list of these resources is available on the WSF website.
As interest and demand swells, one key concern the WSF highlighted: the lack of available safety education and gear through big-box sporting goods stores which dominate retail sales. While buyers can find plenty of inexpensive paddlecraft in those stores, good luck getting any meaningful advice on where to paddle or how to stay safe. Emmons notes many retail giants don’t stock required safety gear that paddlers must carry, such as a Coast Guard-approved life jacket, whistle or other signaling device, or a light for nighttime paddling. As a result, new paddlers often take to the water totally unprepared for potential danger zones.
“Nearly 75 percent of paddlesports casualties involve recreational kayaks when the operator had less than 100 hours of experience; around 45 percent occur with less than 10 hours of experience,” said Emmons. “Typical scenarios involve inexperienced paddlers falling overboard or capsizing without knowledge on how to re-board, compounded by cold water shock.”
As with all boating activities, Emmons points to the need for personal investment in paddler/boater education, plus having—and using—the required safety gear and equipment. His simple recommendation? Seek out a local paddling specialty shop: the obvious, best place to get gear and invaluable guidance from knowledgeable experts on how to use it.
“One of our key goals is to educate paddlers and boaters,” Emmons added, “and to encourage them to invest in boating education so they are safe and confident on the water, which leads to greater fun for everyone.”

Grill Masters Share Their Secrets for Better BBQ
You already know that meat plus fire equals magic. Now is the season to marinate in these next-level secrets to raising your grill game. Here are the top tips for better BBQ.
First, Buy Quality Meat
The “manager’s special” bin at Meat Mart is fine if you’re just flipping some sliders. But to join the grill-master pantheon, look to higher powers.
1. American Wagyu Steaks From Snake River Farms
Sure, you might need to remortgage to fund feeding a crowd with filets and strips from the Idaho-based sorceror ranchers at Snake River Farms. So get a load of that deep marbling and buttery tenderness and call the bank already!
Learn More2. King Crab Legs From Pike Place Fish Market
Yep, Pike Place Fish Market, the Seattle seafood purveyor that famously tosses fish can also toss you (via Goldbelly, that is) the kaiju-size crab legs and claws you’ve seen hauled out of the deadly Bering Sea on TV.
Learn More3. Pork Ribs and Shoulders From White Oak Pastures
If you’re into pastured Old World pork breeds, such as Berkshire and Tamworth, then this hog-coddling Georgia family farm is for you. To put it another way, do you like pork that actually tastes like something?
Learn More4. Turkey Wings From Heritage Foods
Face-size turkey wings cook so well on the grill or smoker, and since guests crowd around for the next batch, you don’t need to provide plates! Pssst, each order from Heritage Foods also includes two meaty tails to hoard for yourself.
Learn MoreYes, You Can Smoke That!
The urge to smoke doesn’t stop with turkeys and Boston butts. For your next cookout, go for a little strange on the side.
1. Eggs
Science alert: Eggshells are permeable, resulting in a mahogany, bacon-flavored hard egg fantastic for boosting the flavor of deviled eggs and potato salad. How: Place raw eggs (in the shell) directly on the grate of a 160°F smoker for 30 to 60 minutes.
2. Olives
Take your charcuterie board to the next level with some smoky-salty olives. How: Spread out a mix of pitted, brined olives, green and black, on a metal pan. Add to a 225°F smoker. Check for desired flavor after 30 minutes; leave up to 2 hours for max smokiness.
3. Butter
Awesome spread on toasted buns or grilled corn; one taste of smoky butter will cement your status as a smoker savant. How: Cut up good butter and place in a metal bowl. Add to a 225°F smoker for 3 minutes at full smoke. It will melt a bit, but chill and then stir to fluff up.
4. Cabbage
Banish bitterness and transform cabbage into a moist, tender treat. Simply toss in a favorite dressing, or shred to make the best slaw ever. How: Cut in wedges. Coat in olive oil, salt, and pepper. Add to a 250°F smoker until outer leaves are blackened on the edges, about 3 hours.
Stop Overcooking Your Ribs…and Other Rules for Better BBQ
There’s your neighbor who grills ribs on Memorial Day, and then there’s John Vergos, whose family runs the Rendezvous in Memphis, the BBQ institution that invented dry rub in the 1950s and is regarded by many ’cue nerds as serving the best damn pork ribs in the country. We asked Vergos for some rib-cooking pointers, and, surprisingly in a culture obsessed with secrecy, he didn’t hold back. You can apply his advice to a full recipe available on mensjournal.com.
1. Stay Sane About the Membrane
Tongs duels erupt over whether peeling away the white membrane before grilling flavors or dries out meat. Vergos says it really doesn’t matter. The Rendezvous leaves it be, as would you if you cooked 1,000 slabs a day.
2. GRILL BONE-SIDE DOWN FIRST
Keeps the meatier side from sticking to the grill when raw. Yeah, that makes sense.
3. GET BASTED
After the slab is browned, flip every 30 minutes or so and baste to moisten the meat. Apple cider vinegar is a typical baste base. The Rendezvous uses white vinegar spiked with (pro tip alert) dill pickle juice!
4. DON’T OVERCOOK YOUR RIBS!
Heed these words: Cook until meat falls off the bone and you’ve cooked off the best flavor. “If your emphasis is on sauce instead of the meat, you can cook them forever,” says Vergos. “But since you eat ribs with your hands, there should be a tug to the meat, and a little pink inside.”
5. RUB LAST
Apply dry spice rub to raw ribs pregrill if you want. But you must apply a final baste and then plenty of dry rub just before serving. Formulas abound, but for a taste of the Rendezvous, deploy plenty of paprika, garlic powder, kosher salt, and yellow mustard seeds.

with thick tomato molasses sauce.

6. Memphis
Style: Paprika-rubbed pork rib slabs and smoky pulled pork shoulder sandwiches with optional tomato-based
sweet sauce.

How to Make Herb-Marinated Hanging Leg of Lamb
Not in the mood to man the grill during your next cookout? (Though grilled oysters with nduja butter are always worth it.) If you want your main course to put on a show while you mingle and imbibe, go for this gourmet, easier-than-it-looks showstopper: herb-marinated hanging leg of lamb.
Here’s what you’ll need: A campfire cooking tripod, preferably one that’s cast iron, which are available at outdoors stores and online; butcher’s hook; meat thermometer.
The herb marinade is deceptively simple but insanely flavorful, imparting tanginess from the outside crust down to the bone. Now, as for the cooking method, don’t be intimidated. The key is a consistent flame. You’re letting your equipment do all the work. Just skewer the butcher’s hook through the leg of lamb and position roughly two to three feet over the fire, while keeping the rig and lamb close to the ground for even cooking.
The cast iron under the lamb will catch all those beautiful drippings; add root vegetables, like we suggest in the recipe below, or merely use it to baste the lamb as it cooks.

The Best Adventure Schools for Mastering Outdoor Skills
John Juracek, one of the best fly-casting teachers on the planet, squints at my reach-cast and tells me to tweak the finish with a bigger sweep of my arm. Then Juracek moves down the row of students, critiquing, slapping his leg with a yellow section of rod as if it were Patton’s riding crop. We’re standing on a grassy lawn at one of the best adventure schools in the U.S., beside a slow slide of Idaho’s famed Henry’s Fork. We’re casting into hula hoops at 20 paces. “You must work to achieve enlightenment. It must be hard before it is easy,” Juracek says. “Or whatever.” He cracks a sly grin.
Going back to school
I’m here at the four-day School of Trout because when it comes to chasing fins, I need some higher ed. True, I’ve pursued fish from Patagonia to Alaska, and even caught a few of them. But my cast is a train wreck on a four-count rhythm. I need other skills, too, if I’ll ever have a chance against wily trout on new rivers—and YouTube can only take a guy so far. Where better to learn than an Advanced Class taught by marquee names like Juracek, on the Idaho river often described as the graduate school of dry-fly fishing?
Some fishermen want to be led around by the nose by a guide. They want to rip lips, and the more, the better. They aren’t interested in learning about insects, or about how to counter the wind. School of Trout is not for them. “We’re giving people the skills to be creative problem-solvers on the river,” says Todd Tanner, the school’s founder and a former guide here. “We’re trying to teach people how to think out there.”
Intensive study
Don’t come to this school thinking it will be all recess. Our August mornings begin early and go late. We start when the dew is still on the grass, brushing up on fundamentals of casting—the pile cast, the reach cast—under the eye of Juracek, a coach of world-champion fly casters. After that one morning, pro fisherman Jeff Currier jumps into the water to demonstrate how he combats micro-drag, that infinitesimal tug on a dry fly that makes a picky fish refuse it. (One tip: Try the ‘drag & drop’ method: aim your fly a bit more upstream and beyond the target…then drag it gently into the correct lane of water, now backed by plenty of slack.)
Sometimes we climb into the river ourselves, firing casts at bright floats weighted by horseshoes. Afternoons, we head to the Henry’s Fork and put it all together, stalking the Ph.D.-holding trout of the river’s famed Harriman Ranch reach, an instructor at our hips, as the giants that rise to feed on hatching PMD’s pucker the water in slowly expanding circles.
If there’s a theme to the curriculum, it’s one I needed to hear again: Don’t pound to the river’s edge and lash the water. Slow down. Notice the bugs that are caught in a spiderweb among the reeds. Listen for the slurp of a big fish taking mayflies off the bank, and where it came from. “Observation is fishing,” says Juracek.
At night we return to the TroutHunter Lodge to talk about the day over hand-cut bison ribeyes and beers. Then it’s back outside to fish the evening hatch behind the lodge, or more casting practice under the instructors’ watchful eyes.
The last day, when class is dismissed, I head once more to the Ranch. There, I land my first Ranch rainbow. It isn’t the biggest. But I do it myself, no one at my hip this time, and using what I’ve learned. Which makes it the sweetest.
For 2021, the School of Trout is offering a week-long Basic Trout Class in October for $7,950 and a shorter Advanced Dry Fly Class in August for $4,950. Both classes will be held at TroutHunter. Costs include meals, lodging, and all instruction.

Other Adventure Schools:
Learn to Hunt
A lot of us today want to be in touch with where our food originates. But we don’t know where to start. The Awaken the Hunter Course from Human Nature Hunting teaches would-be hunters the skills and confidence to hunt on their own for bigger game such as deer or elk. The intensive four-day course, which is held on the company’s private land in northeastern Washington state, covers preparation, tracking and scouting for animals, meat processing and how to shoot bows and rifles (not to mention home-cooked meals prepared from the animal the students butcher and evening talks about what it means to be a meat-eater, today).
Courses are held spring and summer, and autumn hunting season is brief, but the course adapts by fielding dressing and butchering a sheep—which, stripped of its wool, looks much like a deer, and with realistic simulated hunts shooting at targets in field conditions.

Row your Boat
“There is nothing—absolutely nothing—half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats,” as Water Rat said to Mole in The Wind in the Willows. But how do you learn to mess about safely, and adeptly? Well-regarded whitewater company OARS offers several six- and seven-day rowing clinics on the Class II-III water of classic rivers of the West such as Utah’s Green River and Oregon’s Rogue. Seasoned guides teach the entire time, about how to read and row whitewater; knots; what to bring and not bring on a river trip (and how to stow it). You’ll leave the week with the chops to run a basic multi-day trip on your own. Visit their site for dates.

(Learn to) Sail Away
A lot of us daydream of drifting among postcard Caribbean islands with friends. But a reality check: Few of us know how to sail a big boat. Blue Water Sailing School knows how to make that dream a reality. On its week-long Bareboat Skipper Course out of Ft. Lauderdale and the U.S. Virgin Islands, students board a 40-some-foot sailboat on Saturday and don’t touch land for a week, sailing for Biscayne Bay in the northern Keys or the U.S. and British Virgin Islands, learning the entire time the fundamentals you need to operate safely a larger sailboat, including knots, tacking and jibing, trimming sails, docking, weather. It’s a lot to learn, but if you pay attention, you’ll leave with the knowledge (and certs) to skipper coastal waters on your own in moderate conditions.

This Weighted Core Workout Will Have Your Abs Screaming
Abs are the centerpiece of your physique. Aesthetics aside, the stronger they are, the greater your athletic performance: You’ll run faster and lift heavier. To level up your core strength, add weighted abs exercises. Rather than a blitz, this workout prioritizes “control and time under tension,” says Chase Weber, celebrity trainer and founder of THR33 Active CBD cream. Your whole body is recruited for stability, but your abs will be screaming.
Directions: Perform straight sets, following prescribed reps and sets for each move. Rest 30 seconds between sets and 60 seconds between exercises. Repeat workout 3 times a week—twice as a finisher for full body or split routines, and once on a recovery day.
1. Weighted Hyperextensions
How to do it: Lock yourself into a hyperextension or glute-ham machine, feet anchored, hips over pad. Hug a weight plate at chest and bend at hips to lower and lift slowly for counts of 2, squeezing glutes to protect low back at top. You can also use a heavy resistance band: Strap it underneath the hyperextension machine, then wrap the top against the back of your neck, holding the band in place with hands.
Prescription: 4 x 15 reps
2. Weighted Copenhagen Plank
How to do it: Position a bench or stool down by your feet. (You don’t want it to be too tall since you’re performing an elevated side plank from your forearm.) Lie on your left side, left forearm planted on floor inside of right foot resting on top of bench. Hold a 25-pound weight plate or vest on the side of your top hip. Raise your body off the floor, supporting your weight with your right foot and left forearm. Pro tip: Make it harder by performing slow-tempo hip dips.
Prescription: 5 x 60 seconds each side
3. Kettlebell Plank Sweeps
How to do it: Hold a high plank with a kettlebell just outside your left hand. Reach under your torso to grab the kettlebell with your right hand and “sweep” or drag the KB back and forth with a full range of motion. Keep your core tight, glutes engaged, and hips level. Your obliques should power this exercise.
Prescription: 4 x 60 seconds each side
4. Side Plank Cable Reach-Through (shown above)
How to do it: Begin in a side plank on your left forearm with your back to the cable machine. Thread your right arm under your body to grab the handle of the attachment. Brace your core as you extend your arm, pulling the cable until your arm is fully extended, soft bend in elbow, squeezing glutes at top. Pause briefly, then reverse the motion. Move slow and controlled.
Prescription: 4 x 60 seconds each side
5. Rocking Crunches
How to do it: Use elbows to squeeze two 5-pound plates flat against top of thighs, just above knees. Rock back and forth without letting the plates slide. If that’s too challenging, use a yoga block.
Prescription: 5 x 60 seconds

Damian Lillard on Shooting Threes and Why He Feels Like Forrest Gump
Portland Trail Blazers legend and six-time NBA All-Star Damian Lillard is arguably the NBA’s most clutch player and best rapper. He also happens to be an endorsement magnet who made as much money as Oprah and Paul McCartney in 2020. We caught up with Lillard to talk basketball, tattoos, movies, and more.
Men’s Journal: When did you decide to start bombing from way behind the three-point line in games?
Damian Lillard: In (2018), New Orleans swept us in the playoffs. It was an embarrassing series. I got with my trainer to address things I could improve to make the game a little bit easier for myself. I’ve always been able to shoot deep, but we took it to another level. Our training was there’s the NBA three-point line, then we had the four-point line. We would do a whole workout from the four-point line. We just kept building it up, and over the years it’s become easier and easier. Here we are now.
What’s the secret to coming through in the clutch?
A lot of people train during the offseason to get ready for the season. Then we play so many games, the time that you put into keeping yourself sharp kind of goes away. For me during the season, I’m still getting those sharp reps in. Even when my mind is tired, my body’s a little bit tired, I’m telling myself I have to do this. Over time once you know you’ve fully prepared yourself, I just think you feel different in those situations.
Cheap and Deep: Portland, Oregon, on a Budget
You and Steph Curry have been called the most exciting players in the NBA. Do you feel more rivalry or camaraderie with Curry?
More camaraderie. This day and age everything is a comparison. I can’t have a good game without them saying, “Oh, but Steph is better.” If I shoot a deep three and people are like, “Oh, that’s Logo Lillard!” then it’s like, “Nah, Steph started doing it first.” People make it a rivalry. But when me and Steph speak we cool, you know? I appreciate him, I think he appreciates me. And that’s that.
You got your first tattoo in a mall in Utah. Where’s the next one?
I don’t know if I got much room left. I don’t want to tattoo my legs and I don’t want to tattoo my neck. And my back, that’s a painful spot, so I might be done.
Have you ever personally sold a car at Damian Lillard Toyota?
I sold my first car yesterday, actually.
What kind?
A Prius.
Favorite movie?
Forrest Gump definitely had an impact on me.
Favorite old school rapper?
Tupac is my favorite rapper of all-time.
It’s your funeral, which Tupac track do you play: “Life Goes On” or “Picture Me Rollin’”?
“Life Goes On.”
First concert?
I went to a Hot Boys concert in Oakland when I was like 11.
Your GOAT Spirit rap video shows your home gym, but do you mix any outdoor sports into your fitness routine?
Last year during quarantine, me and my fiancée bought bikes and started going on rides. When she said, “Let’s get some bikes” I was thinking, like, Mongoose bikes. But we went to this bike store. I didn’t know bikes were this expensive.
How much did you spend?
My bike was $2,500. It’s an electric bike. It’s crazy because I didn’t even know these kind of bikes existed, but I like it a lot.
Who’s the greatest Blazer: Bill Walton, Clyde Drexler, or you?
Walton won MVP, won a championship. Clyde is one of the greatest players of all time, and went to two Finals. [The Clyde Drexler-led Trail Blazers lost in the NBA Finals to the Detroit Pistons in 1990 and Chicago Bulls in 1992.] So, it’s great company to be in. I always say I don’t think anybody that’s played here has taken more pride than me in putting on the Trail Blazers uniform, and wanting to get it done for this city and our fans. And the numbers are there. I think by the time I’m done, I will be the greatest Trail Blazer of all time.
Do you have fun when you’re playing? It’s hard to tell.
I have a lot of fun, and I really enjoy the game. I enjoy the ups and downs of it, the challenges, the excitement. But I take it serious, you know? I laugh about the game a lot in the locker room—then the joy comes out. But on the court, my expression doesn’t say so.
Your loyalty to small markets—Oakland, Ogden, Portland—has made you beloved nationally. Do you carry that small-town chip on your shoulder?
I do, but it’s not like I’m doing it on purpose. What it comes down to is I don’t view myself as a big deal. I’m aware of everything that’s happening—the endorsements, playing in the All-Star Game, and being on the cover of video games. But it’s hard to look at that and be full of myself when my relationships and people around me all feel normal.
Like Forrest Gump?
I feel like Forrest Gump! This dude was an all-American football player, came up with “shit happens,” and invested in Apple in 1994—but he just wanted to mow the lawn for free, you know what I’m saying? And it wasn’t like he was trying to play no role, it was just like this is who he is. He didn’t view himself like everybody else did. And I think that’s what it is for me.

Bio-Hacking with Gary Brecka: MTHFR, Alzheimers, Hormones, Vaccines and More
I’ve always been intrigued by Bio-Hacking. How can we go even deeper with our blood work? How can we customize things to avoid a disease that may happen? How can we seem younger?
Then I met Gary Brecka, he is the founder of Streamline Medical Group. He is a human biologist, a bio-hacker himself, and an expert medical researcher. Some of his clients include Grant Cardone, Prince & Princess of Morocco, and some of the top UFC fighters.
So, I dive deep with Gary on things like the MTHFR gene, what do we do when we have that? What can we do with things like ADHD and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. What do we do when our insulin is out of whack? We also touch on some controversial topics like vaccines and COVID.
Tune in today and LISTEN UP as I sit down with Gary Brecka in this fascinating conversation.
In this episode, you will learn:
- What you can do if you have the MTHFR gene
- How you insulin levels effect so much
- Should you be getting the vaccine if you already had COVID
